One of the most divisive issues in Kitimat, B.C., in a generation came to a head Saturday night as residents voted 'no' against Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline project.
The ballot count from Saturday's vote was 1,793 opposed versus 1,278 who supported the multi-billion dollar project a margin of 58.4 per cent to 41.6 per cent.
"The people have spoken. Thats what we wanted its a democratic process, said Mayor Joanne Monaghan in a statement on Sunday. Well be talking about this Monday night at Council, and then well go from there with whatever Council decides.
More than 900 residents voted in advance polls on a question that has split the community.

Way to go Kitimat! Even with all the money Enbridge spends on their PR and advertising, they still can't pull off a win. This pipeline is not inevitable. The first nations are blockading in strategic areas and people are mobilizing all over the province to help.

(5,562 posts)Kitimat residents have voted against the Northern Gateway pipeline, with 58 per cent of ballots in the city's plebiscite being cast against the project as of 9 p.m. Saturday. In total, 1,793 voted against the proposed project, while 1,278 or 41.6 per cent were in favour.
Over three thousand ballots were cast, marking a high turnout (71 per cent) in the community of roughly 4,300 eligible voters at the terminus of Enbridge's proposed oil pipeline. Fifty-six per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in the last municipal election.
"We're celebrating with the Haisla outside in the park
and they're surrounding the Douglas Channel Watch with thank you signs. They're performing a drum song right now," said Patricia Lange from Douglas Channel Watch. "It's a really powerful moment."
