Some conversations? That's not threatening, try having two careers snuffed out and threats of violence if I "went public" with what I knew (no worries there, Canada is more focused on censorship, not journalism or human rights).

At least in this case they had some reasonable grounds to be concerned (potential foreign threat), far more legitimate than say, them protecting the asses of the RCMP and CSIS from exposure by a non-threatening individual. This is a HUGE improvement over the usual rabbit chasing.
