Ghomeshi out at CBC; intends to sue

The CBC has ended its relationship with renowned broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi after receiving information that “precludes” the corporation from continuing to employ one of its biggest stars.

In an e-mail, CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson said “Information came to our attention recently, that in CBC's judgement, precludes us from continuing our relationship with Jian Ghomeshi.”

“The CBC is saddened to announce its relationship with Jian Ghomeshi has come to an end,” the corporation said in an earlier statement. “This decision was not made without serious deliberation and careful consideration. Jian has made an immense contribution to the CBC and we wish him well.”

In response, lawyers for Mr. Ghomeshi say he intends to sue the CBC for $50-million when courts open Monday morning.

I follow Ghomeshi on Twitter, @jianghomeshi and he just posted this link to his facebook: https://t.co/uPjLQd2S4n

If what Ghomeshi says is true, it's a case of revenge and some ass-covering by CBC, which honestly I can understand when much of your audience is an older, conservative demographic. I don't agree with it, but I understand why they might make it.

Also, some people are up in arms. I also follow Lisbeth Salander (city hall commentator) @neville_park, who jumped in with

"False allegations"? WHICH TIME, YOU RAPEY FUCK? CAUSE I'M PRETTY SURE NOT EVERYONE WAS LYING.

So, I guess we shall see who comes out to say what.

it seems Mr. Ghomeshi agreed to take an indeterminate leave of absence so there is something happening for sure. I will wait for more facts before judging either CBC or Ghomeshi.

Understand it he was taking a leave of absence for personal reasons.
Now the CBC has fired him.
If they wanted to protect the CBC they would have remained silent until others had decided his condition.
The government does what it wants and the head of CBC does what the government wants.

CBC’s leaders bring it to the brink of an existential crisis: Burman

If there was any doubt that Canada’s public broadcaster is confronting an unprecedented existential crisis, it vanished Thursday. CBC President Hubert Lacroix unveiled the corporation’s latest five-year plan at a “town hall” meeting of staff in a performance that was as disingenuous as it was depressing.

The CBC’s enemies are not only circling their prey from the outside, including the Conservative government with its unrelenting budget cuts. Its enemies are also working from within. The CBC has a compliant board of directors overwhelmingly stacked with Conservative party donors and a president, also conservative, who appears ready to implement any budget cut in virtual silence.

Lacroix delivered for the government Thursday. Although confirming the CBC will cut up to 1,500 more jobs in the next five years, including CBC’s renowned documentary unit that produced Canada: A People’s History and other groundbreaking programs, he described it as “a good day, it’s an important day. This is a plan that’s going to work.”

But what this “plan” will actually accomplish in the long-term is the burning issue, not only for CBC staff but, more importantly, for Canadians everywhere who value public broadcasting.

CBC cuts ties with Jian Ghomeshi after receiving “information” about Q host

CBC’s sudden decision to cut ties with star host Jian Ghomeshi came after “information” came to the public broadcasters attention that “precludes us from continuing our relationship,” a senior spokesman told the Star.

What that information is, CBC media relations chief Chuck Thompson said he was not at liberty to say.

“Information came to (CBC’s) attention recently that in CBC’s judgment precludes us from continuing our relationship with Jian Ghomeshi,” Thompson said in an interview.

Ghomeshi stated on his Facebook page Sunday that he was fired because of the risk “of my private sex life being made public as a result of a campaign of false allegations pursued by a jilted ex girlfriend and a freelance writer.”

they announced they had severed their relationship with him without explaining why, simply that he was gone. It is Ghomeshi who filled in the details not CBC.

Him.
They did not provide a reason. There is a union involved. All they had to do was suspend him until a decision is made that he does not meet the CBC's requirements!
Plain and simple. We don't need superior ministers deciding what is and isn't. Just read Burman's article to understand the government's objective. Squeeze and when a mistake is made then sell off the assets to the friendly fox or equivalent mid east media!

CBC and Ghomeshi had been in discussions about this for a period of time and Ghomeshi agreed to take an indeterminate leave as a result. Something new must have come to the attention of CBC which resulted in the severing of the relationship between CBC and Ghomeshi.

The Toronto Star has been investigating the allegations since last summer, allegations by three women, actually four, three with abuse and one with harassment.

"Early last summer, the Star began looking into allegations by young women of sexual abuse by Ghomeshi over the past two years. The Star conducted detailed interviews with the women, talking to each woman several times. None of the women filed police complaints and none agreed to go on the record. The reasons given for not coming forward publicly include the fear that they would be sued or would be the object of Internet retaliation. (A woman who wrote an account of an encounter with a Canadian radio host believed to be Ghomeshi was subjected to vicious Internet attacks by online readers who said they were supporters of the host.)"

Until more information comes out, but I do know that $50 million is ridiculous. He'll probably be more of a celebrity with better earning potential if he can frame himself as the '50 shades dude' (which he is trying to do in his letter)

but the Star article is pretty damning. They spoke with 3 women, and I doubt they would publish unless they were absolutely sure of their sources. And if this stuff is true, the CBC had no choice but to can him.

...
In one woman’s case, she visited Ghomeshi at his Toronto home and alleges as soon as she walked into his house he suddenly struck her hard with his open hand, then continued to hit her and choked her. The woman alleges Ghomeshi repeatedly beat her about the head and choked her.

The Star’s interviews of the women were lengthy. The women, all educated and employed, said Ghomeshi’s actions shocked them.

Another woman, who described a similar alleged attack, said that in the lead-up to their date Ghomeshi “warned me he would be aggressive.”

“I thought this meant he would want to pull my hair and have rough sex. He reassured me that I wouldn’t be forced. (Later) he attacked me. Choked me. Hit me like I didn’t know men hit women. I submitted.
...”

Ages ago, I read the blog piece by the young woman who had the date with "Keith" that everyone guessed was Ghomeshi, and ever since then he gave me the willies.

...on the story.

http://www.thestarphoenix.com/life/MacPherson+Ghomeshi+cool+persona+unsustainable/10331128/story.html

....snip....

"Ghomeshi became something of a hero of mine when he famously kept his composure while interviewing the disagreeable Billy Bob Thornton. I would have lost my temper. Ghomeshi, the cool professional, instead helped him make a fool of himself. Thornton was resoundingly booed when his band opened the next night in Toronto for Willie Nelson.

It colours it for me, learning now that the cooler-thancool radio host is into roughing up women, whether consensually or not. I am not sure I could overlook this when he came on the air. Neither, apparently, could the CBC. Leave aside for the moment the relevant labour laws and contractual obligations. Ghomeshi has violated what Glen Sather, as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, was said to have imposed as his one and only rule with respect to player conduct: You don't embarrass the team."

Navigator, the first one he hired had bailed and, now the second one as well. As more and more allegations come forward, Ghomeshi is going to be hard pressed to get anything out of his civil suit against CBC, imo.

the creepier it gets. That stuff about big ears teddy makes my stomach feel queasy, and there were twitter posts about it as far back as April.

I bet there are dozens of women. I seem to be in the minority, but I never liked him and turned off the radio when the Q came on. I was just talking with a friend about him in a used bookstore just a couple days before the story broke, and the bookstore owner came to his defense saying what a great host he was. I have a feeling that she's rethinking it now.
