Gunman was ideologically and politically motivated, according to RCMP evidence
Paulson said last week Zehaf-Bibeau, whose father was from Libya, may have lashed out in frustration over delays in getting a passport. Paulson said Zehaf-Bibeau's mother told police in an interview that her son had wanted to go Syria.
Susan Bibeau later denied that in a letter published by Postmedia News, saying her son told her he wanted to go to Saudi Arabia where he could study the Qur'an. RCMP confirmed to CBC News on Saturday that indeed they had made an error in transcribing the interview, and that Susan Bibeau did not mention Syria on the recording.

Zaccardelli told staff to drop 2005 election bombshell
OTTAWA -- Former RCMP commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli instructed his staff to include former Liberal finance minister Ralph Goodale’s name in a news release announcing a criminal investigation that helped sway public opinion during the 2005 election campaign.
Mr. Zaccardelli opted to implicate Mr. Goodale in the investigation into the alleged leak of the government’s decision not to tax income trusts despite a Mountie policy not to name suspects unless they have been charged, according to an investigation into the affair.
The RCMP’s public complaints commissioner, Paul Kennedy, investigated the Mounties’ decision to disclose the investigation in December, 2005, at the height of the federal election campaign that brought Stephen Harper’s Conservatives to power. Public support for the Conservatives surged following the disclosure, leading some political observers to call it one of the turning points in the campaign.
Mr. Kennedy concluded the RCMP did not violate any internal policies or legal requirements -- but only because no specific rules exist to address the release of information in “highly sensitive situations.”
