Dalhousie University probes misogynistic student 'Gentlemen's Club'

Dalhousie University in Halifax has launched an investigation into disturbing, sexually explicit Facebook posts attributed to male students in the faculty of dentistry, CBC News has learned.

The men were part of a Facebook group called the Class of DDS 2015 Gentlemen. The group was removed from Facebook late last week.

CBC News has obtained screenshots of the group's posts, which are sexually explicit and appear to involve discussions of female classmates.

At least three of the men have removed their Facebook profiles in the past 24 hours.

Their conversations also include jokes about using chloroform on women.

The words: "Does this rag smell like chloroform to you??" were superimposed on one photo.

In response to another photo of a bikini-clad woman, two members wrote: "Can you tell me what this chloroform smells like?" and "Does this mask smell like nitrous oxide to you?"

The rape part is implied because you don't knock a woman unconscious to give her a manicure.

4. Well, that at least makes most of the universities in town doing something stupid like that. Ugh.

That said, I'm genuinely thrilled at how full-bore my own alma mater went on handling their equivalent "you have to be kidding me" bit of misogynistic bullshit from some students a few years ago. Sometimes administrators not only Get It, but take the right steps in response, and hopefully Dal does some of that here.

Dalhousie dentistry complaints date back to summer, student says

The president of Dalhousie University knew about sexism complaints against the dentistry faculty in the summer, says the vice-president of the Dalhousie Student Union.

"We had received some direct complaints around sexual harassment and sexist comments and preferential treatment of male students, especially in clinical settings," she said Tuesday.

With the complainants' permission, the DSU approached university president Richard Florizone, who referred them to the campus Office of Human Rights, Equity and Harassment Prevention.

Nowoselski said they soon discovered the students could not go forward anonymously with the complaints.

Anyhow, I hope the targets of this misogyny get the justice they want.

9. Expulsion has not been ruled out for 13 male Dalhousie dentistry students

The restorative justice process under way at Dalhousie University does not mean that the school has ruled out expulsion for the 13 male students who wrote misogynistic posts on Facebook, said Richard Florizone, the school’s president.

Pressure on the university increased on Friday as a noon rally demanded that the university take stronger action than it has to date.

About 200 people carrying signs reading “Dalhousie hates women” and “Shame on You President Florizone” protested.

“We all agree there must be serious consequences and there will be. … Everything is on the table. If the women are not happy, if we are not happy,” Dr. Florizone said.
