NDP campaign to stop Hydro One sale points to cheaper power in public systems
The Ontario New Democrats are launching a province-wide campaign to stop the Liberal governments plan for the partial sale of Hydro One.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said Monday Premier Kathleen Wynne has no mandate to sell off the publicly-owned transmission company.
Kathleen Wynne didnt campaign on this. She has no mandate to do this and she has no support from Ontarians for her wrong-headed privatization scheme, she told reporters at Queens Park.
She did not tell them that she was going to do this.
Horwath said her third place party will give Ontarians every chance to be heard on the Liberal plan outlined in the budget to sell off 60 per cent of Hydro One by holding town halls across the province, getting petitions signed and encouraging communities to write to Liberal MPPs to voice their opposition.
We will be doing everything we can to help Ontarians stop Kathleen Wynne because there is no going back on this. Once Hydro is gone, its gone and its Ontarian that will be paying the price, she said, adding that the first town hall meeting will be held on May 7 on Brampton.
Horwath said when previous governments proposed this kind of sell off public backlash forced them to back down, including the former Ernie Eves Progressive Conservative government, which nixed plans to sell off of Hydro One in 2002.
