We call on the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Ralph Goodale, and the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, John McCallum, to evaluate the inadmissibility of Donald J. Trump for entry into Canada under their responsibility for the administration of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, 2001.

We suspect that there are reasonable grounds that Mr. Trump poses a security threat to Canadians based upon his remarks calling for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States", and similar statements that antagonize those who identify as Muslims. Statements of this extreme nature may act to embolden violence against members of the Canadian Muslim population.

Why is this important?

Although we hold dear the freedom of speech, a Charter-based freedom to which Canadian society owes much of its success, we believe that there might be a reasonable limit in this case to the extent that Mr. Trump's statements may incite physical harm against other Canadians. We base this assessment upon the recent acts of violence committed against members of the Canadian Muslim population.

Statistics Canada states that there have been 65 police-reported incidences of hate crime against Muslims in Canada, or 6.2 hate crimes per 100,000 individuals reporting as Muslim. In recent years, for which official figures have not yet been published, there have been a series of alleged hate crimes against Muslims, including a case on November 14, 2015, where a mosque was set on fire in Peterborough, Ontario, a case on November 16, 2015, where two men physically attacked a women wearing a hijab who was picking her children up from school, and a case on November 19, where anti-Muslim graffiti was found on a GO Transit train. Further cases of alleged violence against Muslims are tracked by the National Council of Canadian Muslims and may be found on their website.
