TRREB to drop 'master' bedroom term, replace with 'primary' in coming months

TORONTO — Greater Toronto Area home hunters browsing through property listings will soon notice a change.

The organization will use the word "primary" in place of "master," when referencing the main or principal bedrooms in homes in the coming months, said Toronto Regional Real Estate Board president Lisa Patel. "We know that words matter, and this is a step forward in rethinking outdated terms and modernizing the language used in the real estate industry," TRREB said in a notice sent to realtors about the change.

The Ontario-based board is the latest in a string of real estate organizations to ditch terminology that is often seen as a reference to racism, sexism and slavery.

The Canadian Real Estate Association, for example, switched to using "primary" on Realtor.ca last October after a recommendation from the Real Estate Standards Organization.

I’ve heard them call it the “main” or “primary” bedroom.

Seems sensible, to me.

Not knowing where words came from is unpardonable. Too many people are idiots.

There is no reason not to refer to the largest bedroom as 'primary.'

degree that is a "Masters", or find some other word instead of "master" tradesman. How about master of ceremonies?

I'm sorry, but if the context isn't actually slavery, that word is not offensive. It has many, many meanings and connotations besides that one.

Others are saying "master" is offensive because of its connection to slavery. Given that the use of the word "master" in "master bedroom" actually has zero connection to slavery, it's sheer ignorance to conflate those two. Since it's also not connected to those other things, what precisely is the difference? Except for those who have no knowledge of the origins of that term, again with no connection to slavery, manage to find it offensive.

"master" of the house? Because that WAS the reason the largest bedroom was termed NOT PRIMARY, but "Master" bedroom. In the 1950s, it might have not carried the same connotation, but today? Really?

Any realtor or those in home remodeling that refer that way today deserve not to be taken seriously--right up there with leading the woman client to the kitchen with a tiny counter "nook" when she expresses interest in a home office or asking if her husband has met with the loan officers as well when given no indication the sale was to be to anyone other than a professional single female.

Besides, I live alone. I do use the intended master bedroom (the one with the en suite bathroom) as my guest room, computer room.

Honestly, thinking that needs to be renamed becomes the perfect definition of being a snowflake.

not giving a damn about others. Much like we see from our political opposites and I'm sure your thoughts on this will be quite welcome on their forums. I hope you are not like that, but your accusing others who are offended by certain speech of being "snowflakes," definitely is reminiscent.

Hard drives. Configured as Master and Slave, but one doesn't actually control the other.
Databases - where there is a primary data set and "clones".
Programming languages.

In some cases a name change is warranted. Others - debatable.

OR

a person holding an academic degree higher than a bachelor's but lower than a doctor's or the degree itself even?

What should we now call a great figure of the past (as in science or art) whose work serves as a model or ideal?

a youth or boy too young to be called mister

and so on

I think this whole "political correctness" thing is ridiculous

it ain't "correct" at all

sheesh!

receive a Master's degree. You know damned well that is not the same at all.

But if it is that important to tell others you are "master" of your house, you've told us all we need to know. I feel sorry for those living with you if this is so damned important to YOU.
