Canada displeased with China's claim over Omicron

Canada's health minister has expressed displeasure with Beijing's claim that the city's first known case of the Omicron coronavirus variant can be linked to mail received from Canada.

Jean-Yves Duclos described the assertion as "an extraordinary view" at a news conference on Monday.

Beijing's first Omicron case was confirmed on Saturday. A city health official told reporters on Monday that the authorities cannot rule out the possibility that the infected person got the virus through goods sent from overseas. The official added that what appears to be Omicron was found on mail the person received from Canada.

Canadian media say Duclos responded that Beijing's claim is "not in accordance with what we have done both internationally and domestically."
