(123,117 posts)in the first Trudeau's government. He was an old time liberal with street smarts. He kept our banks regulated in the 1990s and early naughty so we didn't have a subprime meltdown. He kept us out of Iraq. A very good egg.

issue and was a killer with metaphors. Chretien was the Member of Parliament from Shawinigan for 35 years.
We've had liberal PMs who were anglophone and not from Quebec in between but they did not do so well. Trudeau Jr. was born in Ottawa, Ontario and lived there till he was a teen. Then he moved to Quebec. Then he lived in BC. Then he moved back to Quebec and ran.
Some housing activist protestor got right up and in Chretien's space one time on Parliament Hill. Chretien reacted by almost stragling the guy. He was told as a young man to stop fighting if he wanted to be a success in politics. During a speech at a Liberal convention he opened his speech by saying to the Conservative PM (who would be watching the Liberal Convention) "Brian, Brian, ..... do not adjust your tv" to rave applause. He was way smarter than you would assume by how he spoke. He was an expert at "form" instead of language. He was not like Trump in that he was not stupid or narcissistic.
