Heres the BBCs Laura Kuenssbergs take on where she thinks are so far, with the caveat that there are still many hundreds of seats still to declare.

1. Tories haven't had the kicking they were fearing YET
2. Neither have Labour had the kind of gains they might have expected as opposition to a chaotic minority govt YET
3. Both of them will be worried by seeming LibDem resurgence - but imposs to know if that will last

4. Lib Dems, greens and independents big winners of the night at this point
5. Most notable trend at mo is that both the big parties suffering because of Brexit - so voters are protesting, but whether that is to get on with it, stop it, or just sort it somehow, we can't know yet

Its becoming increasingly clear that the Liberal Democrats are the big winners from tonight. Theres talk that they are being seen as the natural party of opposition as voters turn away from the Tories and Labour, in both leave and remain areas.

(14,800 posts)1. Good news and bad news in Sheffield
Liberal Democrats and Greens took seats off Labour in Sheffield. The ward I live in went Liberal Democrat, which I am pleased about as the new councillor is pretty good to be honest.
The outgoing councillor stood for Change UK / TIG and only got 102 votes. The National Front also stood in my ward and only got 36 votes.
The bad news is the the local "independent" group won big on the parish council. This lot are not independent but a front for the far right. And they will cock things up badly at parish council level.

Local elections: Conservatives lose more than 1,300 councillors
3 May 2019
The Conservatives have lost 1,334 councillors, with Theresa May saying voters wanted the main parties to "get on" with Brexit.
Labour also lost 82 seats in the English local elections, in which it had been expected to make gains.
But the strongly pro-EU Lib Dems gained 703 seats, with leader Sir Vince Cable calling every vote received "a vote for stopping Brexit".
The Greens and independents also made gains, as UKIP lost seats.
