Brexit proposals give Northern Ireland unionists a veto: DUP
BELFAST (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnsons Northern Ireland allies on Wednesday said they support his new Brexit proposals because they give pro-British unionists an effective veto over any regulatory alignment with the European Union.
Democratic Unionist Party deputy leader Nigel Dodds told BBC television that the deal, an outline of which was published on Wednesday, provided an absolute defense that no regulatory alignment can be introduced without unionist agreement.
The Irish government has repeatedly indicated it would not accept a veto over the kind of regulatory alignment it believes is required to avoid the reintroduction of a hard border in Ireland that would anger Northern Irelands Irish nationalists.
