UK ditches plans for vaccine passports at crowded venues
September 12, 2021
LONDON (AP) Authorities in Britain have decided not to require vaccine passports for entry into nightclubs and other crowded events in England, Britains health secretary said Sunday, reversing course amid opposition from some of the Conservative governments supporters in Parliament.
Health Minister Sajid Javid said the government has shelved the idea of vaccine passports for now but could reconsider the decision if COVID-19 cases rise exponentially once again.
Weve looked at it properly and whilst we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, Im pleased to say that we will not be going ahead with plans for vaccine passports, Javid told the BBC.
The U-turn came just days after both the governments vaccines minister and the culture secretary suggested that vaccine passports would still be necessary, despite growing opposition from lawmakers.

England abandons vaccine passport plans
By Claire Parker
September 12, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. EDT
As more countries turn to coronavirus vaccination requirements in a bid to bring the pandemic to heel, England is moving in a different direction.
Im pleased to say that we will not be going ahead with plans for vaccine passports, U.K. Health Secretary Sajid Javid told the BBCs Andrew Marr on Sunday.
Theres a lot of defenses that we need to keep in place because this virus hasnt gone anywhere, theres still a pandemic, so of course, we need to remain cautious, he said. But we just shouldnt be doing things for the sake of it or because others are doing it.
The announcement marked a reversal of the governments plan to require proof of full vaccination to enter nightclubs and other crowded venues in England. Intended to incentivize vaccine uptake, especially among young people, the system had been expected to take effect at the end of the month.

(7,949 posts)2. They've not been ditched in Scotland (yet, anyway).
They're still planned to come into action on 1 October.
The Welsh government will decide next week whether to bring in its own passport arrangements:
Vaccine passports still being considered for nightclubs in Wales after plan is scrapped in England
Despite some early hiccups, Northern Ireland's had a passport app since late July (printable PDF versions are also available).

Vaccine passports still an option for Covid winter plans, No 10 says
DOWNING Street has said that vaccine passports are still being considered as an option to protect against a winter wave of Covid cases, despite Sajid Javid saying they were scrapped.
Checks on the vaccine status of people attending nightclubs and other crowded events remain a crucial part of the UK Government's winter Covid plan after the English Health Secretary told the media that they were being scrapped on Sunday.
Plans had been in place for the scheme to go ahead at the end of this month, but Javid rolled back the introduction after pressure from Tory MPs and the hospitality sector.
...
Now, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that ministers will avoid introducing them "if we possibly can and said that they will be kept "in reserve".

It appears the right hand doesn't know what the right hand's doing.
What a shower.
