This would be utterly despicable.
"The fuel crisis may have changed the balance of opinion within govt about the risks of triggering the protocol".
If @stephenkb is right that this is the thinking - that NI must not be allowed to show up the results of its Brexit deal - it's a shocking way of making decisions.

Is David Frost making empty threats about tearing up the Northern Ireland protocol?

The EU think Frost is bluffing as usual but if this is right, Frost and Johnson are considering triggering the protocol because Northern Ireland is not witnessing the shortages that GB is because of the differing trade arrangements with the EU. They are going to risk further destabilisation of Northern Irish communities, risk a hard border on the island of Ireland, risk a return to the violence that would inevitably ensue it that were to happen - because they are embarrassed that the shelves are empty, the petrol tanks are running dry and food is rotting in the fields on the mainland... none of which is happening in NI because common market rules still apply.
That they are even thinking this way demonstrates how utterly despicable they are.
