Related: About this forumI like to see WA US Senator Patty Murray not seek re-election in 2028 in order for Pramila Jayapal
to become US Senator.
Jayapal will become the first Indian born United States Senator (from WA). She currently represents Seattle in the US House of Representatives.
Jayapal is a member(chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus), Medicare for All Caucus.
Patty Murray has been in the US Senate since 1993.
Patty Murray should do to Pramila Jayapal in 2028 WA US Senate Election what Tom Carper is doing to Lisa Blunt Rochester in the 2024 DE US Senate Election. WA other Democratic US Senator Maria Cantwell is seeking re-election next year in 2024.

A socialist can get elected in Seattle, but would have a much harder time in a statewide election.

(3,356 posts)Other than that's what all Republics call all Democrats.
I think maybe you're thinking of Kshama Sawant...
I've never heard anyone serious call Pramila a socialist.

(109,588 posts)Pramila was a strong Bernie supporter, and also a supporter of Kshama Sawant.
Outside of King County, socialists of any variation, including Democratic Socialists, don't have much support. So if Pramila was aiming for statewide office, it hasn't seemed that way.

"The idea that government should have a critical role in providing for basic needs of everybody to bring everybody to a certain standard is not socialism, but that's what they want to keep calling it," Jayapal said of Republicans' criticism. "I think that is the concept of democratic socialism."

(3,356 posts)Jayapal's really too mainstream to be credibly tarred with the socialist label.
"She supported Bernie, therefore..." is not actually a very strong argument.

(109,588 posts)I don't know why people like Bernie are so attached to the word socialism (instead of calling themselves FDR Democrats, etc.), but they are. But insisting on calling themselves Democratic socialists doesn't help them get elected outside of liberal cities.

(8,617 posts)In 2020, Joe Biden carried WA by a 19.2 percent margin. Bidens margin of victory in WA is greater than his margin of victory in DE,IL,NJ,and OR.
In 2022, Patty Murray won re-election by a 14.5 percent margin.
In 2024, Joe Biden will carry WA by a 20 percent margin. Maria Cantwell will re-election to the US Senate by a 20 percent margin.
Pramila Jayapal will be able to win statewide in WA in 2028.
I am not encouraging a primary challenge against Patty Murray or Maria Cantwell but I am suggesting WA Senior and longest US Senator Patty Murray who is currently US Senate President Pro Temp to step down voluntarily after 36 year service for new leadership.
Follow the example of
Tom Carper-DE
Ben Cardin-MD
Debbie Stabenow-MI
Pat Leahy-VT
Tom Udall-NM
Barbara Boxer-CA
Barbara Mikulski-MD.

(29,100 posts)Jayapal has been doing a great job leading the house Progressives and would run a high stakes race for that Senate seat. Eastern WA Republicans would run rough shot over her and that race would be way to close to call IMO
Murray knows the workings of the Senate in and out and has been instrumental in assuring their legislative wins. She is high up in the Democratic leadership. You may not hear much from her in the news but she is one of those wonky silent folks who gets the heavy lifting done. She is also the Senates first female President Pro Tem and is the most senior member of the majority party.

(8,617 posts)in 2028 against any Democratic candidate that is not Patty Murray?
Patty Murray has survived to US Senate re-elections in
1998 against Linda Smith
2004 against George Nethercutt.
2010 against Dino Rossi.
2016 against Chris Vance.
2022 against Tiffany Smiley.
Let me ask you another question!
Should Chuck Schumer-NY run for re-election in 2028 due to the fact that he is US Senate majority leader? If Schumer-NY chooses not to seek re-election. it will allow Democrats like
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez to become US Senator.

(29,100 posts)Cathy McMorris may be a bit more vulnerable but she is likely to win. I'm curious about how the abortion laws in Idaho will impact her district next to the state border. We may see a more liberal swing there as a result.
As far as Schumer goes, I'm not as familiar with NY politics but he is someone who has been reelected time and time again and we can't risk Senate Seat. (Personally, I wish Elizabeth Warren was Majority Leader but that's not ever going to happen) Alexandria Ocasio Cortez could not win an election as a Senator. Upstate NY is more Conservative and she would not get their votes. It's unlikely she would even win a primary. Sad but true.

(8,617 posts)The Likely Democratic Nominee for President(Kamala Harris) in 2028 will carry WA by a double landslide margin. The other Democratic US Senate candidates for the 2028 WA US Senate Election other than Patty Murray and Pramila Jayapal are Suzan DelBene and Marilyn Strickland.
NY state is has became more competitive in 2022. Schumer-D won by a 14 percent in 2022 compared to his 43 percent margin of victory in 2016. The best candidate for Democrats in a NY US Senate Election other than Schumer and Gillibrand is Lt Governor Antonio DelGado.
DelGado is a 1/2 Black and 1/2 Latino Democrat from Upstate NY. Delgado represented a US House District that was previously representated by Gillibrand before she became US Senator.
Delgado and Gillibrand US House district is based in Upstate,NY.

(29,100 posts)A few years ago she was third ranking Republican in the house and has been maintaining a far lower profile. I don't know if she's been ill or what. We never hear about her in Western WA. I think it would be hard for an Eastern WA Republicans' to win in this political climate however we don't know who will win the Governors race yet either. Dave Reichart if he loses the Govenors race which he most likely will could be a formable Republican and we don't know yet who will be waiting in the wings. As a lefty I love Jayapal but moderates and independents will not vote for her. Of course everything can flip on a dime if Trump wins or if folks don't get out to vote. In a blue state you always run the risk of taking the Democrats winning for granted though we all vote by mail here.

(8,617 posts)They are the only people other than Jayapal to make a US Senate run in WA.
Smith and Larsen are going to be committee chairmanship (Smith- Armed Services/Larsen- Transportation) when the Democrats regain control of the US House of Representatives. Schrier and Gluek Perez are in Tossup US House districts. They need to stay in the House in order for Democrats to remain in the majority in the US House.

(29,100 posts)Kilmer is perhaps the best known statewide and a solid choice. Strickland is still a relatively new face to most of us outside Pierce county and I believe she is in her first term as a Rep. Looking forward to seeing how she progresses. Del Bene certainly has the the money and network to get the nod. I still think it may be too early to seriously speculate.
