Ed Markey had been serving in the US House since 1976. The MA US Senate seat was open in 1984 when Paul Tsongas retired. John Kerry took that seat, 2009 when Ted Kennedy died, Martha Coakley was the Democratic nominee for that seat who lost to Scott Brown who lost to Elizabeth Warren. 2013 John Kerry resigned to become US Secretary of State and was replaced by Ed Markey.
In NJ, Since Pallone been in the US House, NJ had open US Senate seat in 1996 when Bill Bradley retired, Bob Torricelli took that seat, 2000 when Frank Lautenberg retired, Jon Corzine took that seat, 2002 when Torricelli retired, Lautenberg took that seat, 2006 when Corzine resigned to become Governor, Bob Menendez took that seat, 2013 when Lautenberg died, Cory Booker took that seat. Pallone has been in the US House since 1988 making him the most senior Democratic member of the NJ US Congressional Delegation.
