Election Reform
Related: About this forumWe'll have to vote in person.
I know many of us wanted to vote by mail during a pandemic, but that seems too risky, now. Louis DeJoy has sabotaged the post office by getting rid of the sorting machines, severely delaying the mail.
I mailed a birthday card to my grandfather with a first class stamp. We live in the same area and it took TWO WEEKS for it to get to him. If it takes two weeks for my mail-in ballot to get to me, it will take at least to weeks to be mailed back for counting. Im not comfortable with that.
Look, I know many of us are afraid of catching Covid by waiting in line to vote, but we are running out of options. If possible, please vote early in person. I dont mean vote early on Election Day, but go in and vote on an early voting day. Where I live there are usually no lines at early voting locations. No lines means low chance of catching covid. Wear a mask and wash your hands before and after casting your ballot.
If you already requested a mail-in ballot, DO NOT MAIL IT BACK! Odds are it will get delayed and possibly not be counted. Please return your ballot at a sanctioned drop off area. Depending on what your local board of elections says, there are usually drop off boxes and early voting locations you can return your ballot to. Make sure it is filled out correctly!
You should only mail back you ballot as a last resort. If you only have the option of mailing it back, do it as early as possible. My friend is a postal worker. He said the stories about DeJoys sabotage are true and its making his job to sort and send mail very difficult. He said if you must mail your ballot in, mail it in very early!
Trumps supporters are mostly voting in person and are against vote by mail. They are hoping our votes will be thrown out. We cant afford to take any chances.
Please make sure your vote is counted! Another four years of Trump means more covid deaths, more civil unrest, and more fascism.

VOTE early in person in the states that allow it. Hand deliver your mail-in ballot to the address on the final envelop if one can. We must not allow our power to be taken away from us.

(1,367 posts)Michigan doesnt have early voting. I assume because the republicans control the house and senate and, until 2018, they had the governorship for 8 years. With the weather we can have, even in early November ( its been known to snow on Halloween) you would think we could have at least a week, but noooooo. The only reason we are voting by mail is that we are old (68 and 69) both asthmatics and Covid. Even then we are going to take our ballots to the drop box downtown. Assuming its still there. I just emailed a note to governor Whitmer about trying to get early voting, but, course, republicans.

(482 posts)I googled it. It says they have in-person absentee voting, which sounds like an oxymoron.

(12,182 posts)My family all received their ballots - 3 dem, 1 repub, but I haven't. I checked https://ivote.de.gov/ and it says my ballot was sent out 08/16 and that I'm registered to vote absentee/mail in for the General election. I figured the primary would be a good trial to make sure that it worked.

(6 posts)Early voting is the answer. As soon as early voting opens up, go ahead and do it in person. Leave mail-in voting for those that unable to do so or have underlying health issues that put their health at risk if they contract covid.
