Everyone in New England knows the luxury of flannel sheets in the winter. So warm and soft you never want to get out of bed.
The NY Times rated 14 sets recently. Their ratings seem to factor in value and comfort. Their top three (price is for a queen set):
1. LL Bean (no surprise) Ultrasoft Comfort. Luxury Portuguese flannel. $120
2. Target Threshold. Incredible bargain. Offered in many changing patterns. In short supply now. They get restocked throughout the winter $30.
3. LL Bean Premium Supima: Even thicker and softer than 1. Perhaps lower rated because of the much higher price $200.
Apparently they have been doing these ratings for years. Durability is taken into account.

(7,769 posts)It rarely snows where I live, but we can have serious freezing temps in the winter from time to time.

(6,046 posts)I'm from warm country - never slept in flannel. It would drive me nuts to get all wrapped up like that!

(7,769 posts)I'm looking at the LL Bean stunning $ amount vs Target.
Flannel of "yesterday" didn't pill and the weave effected just the right amount of denseness. if the sheet was held up against the light, it didn't seep through. I need a set of good quality flannels, and prefer solid colors with no plaid or other print designs. But I certainly cannot afford LL Bean's price range.
Anyone buy theirs from Target? How's the quality seem for you?
I know you get what you pay for, but if the ones at Target are actually flannel and not the so called "brush" (which I hate) I'd go with Target if the quality is sufficient enough.

80 percent. It did say they shrank about 4 percent in the wash as opposed to the Bean 2 percent.

(7,769 posts)Generally speaking, the standard seems to be over sized depth/height (ymmv) per popular consumer preference. My mattress isn't permanently topped or exceedingly deep, rendering my fitted sheet not as snug fitting as I would like these days requiring diy fixes.

My log home doesn't have heat in the U/S bedroom.....these 3 things make a total difference.
