Seagate Firecuda HDD. Dead in 30 days.
Replaced a 7 yr old Barracuda .5G that was still working in a 7 yr old Asus gamer laptop. Freaking Best Buy wont take it back. Thing just died right in the middle of the Dem debate, but started developing bad sectors last night, no previous signs. Im restoring a backup to the original drive and then buying the SSD I should have. Im pissed.

(49,036 posts)Stupid me didnt even look much at them. Crucial has a nice one. The new drive was because the old one scared me especially with upgrading to win 10, i didnt think it could handle all that.

I worked on many computers, the seagates failed frequently

(49,036 posts)AFAIK. I always look for the longest warranty. The dead one expired about 5 years early.

(33,643 posts)7 y.o. is pretty old for a lappie. Could be your HD controller failing ... hopefully not though.
SSD is kinda a no-brainer for a laptop at this point, but I will say I have 4 HD's in my desktop ... 3 spinners that are 7-10 y.o. and one SSD ... which I just replaced after about 4 years.
They DEFINITELY wear out ... esp. when used as a System drive. In my case, much faster than my less-used spinners which are still going strong.
And they tend to die pretty sudden-like. Backups are key

(49,036 posts)Was heat that killed it. When they named firecuda it might have been because they run real damn hot.

I've never heard of a disk drive that didn't have a warranty measured in years! 3 years used to be typical, I'd shop for 5 years. Unless it was embedded in an Apple product of course
Did Best Buy say to return it to Seagate or imply you were just screwed?

(49,036 posts)They offered to send it to Seagate. I am not satisfied with that not when it breaks that quick.
