Question on Taxes - using Turbo Tax

So, I am pretty much finished with my 2020 Fed/State returns. However, I have a problem that is driving ne nutz.

I need to use an IRS IP ID#. I have it and it is a 6 digit number. However, when I try to input into Turbo Tax, there is only space for a 5 digit number. Anyone else run into this?

Also, both State and Federal returns will be returning me substantial refunds as I declare 0 dependents....it's like a savings acct, I guess. What's my penaltyu for missing todays date....I had thought it got extended to July, but apparently not.

I'm sure you could find it pretty easy using their support resouces. Turo Tax is usually pretty good about that kind of suff.

3. I found an answer from 2019, maybe it will help

(edited because I might have found a better answer)

"How can I enter all 6 digits of my IRS PIN in Turbotax? The form is only allowing me to enter 5 digits."

"The 6-digit code you have is your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) - that is different from the 5-digit PIN that is your electronic signature. Please see the TurboTax FAQ below for how to enter your IP PIN."

There's a link to help:

I ended up printing/mailing my return last year. Wish I had researched the problem better back then. Will keep my IRS Pin ID# and the TT 5 digit number for next year's taxes!

when I filed electronically for the first time. I was so pissed off when I found out I still had to mail them in since the IRS didn't have my number in their system (it was with H & R Block's free services for low income taxpayers). This year my 2nd stimulus of $600 was never received and my March bills were all lost by the USPS so I was nervous about having to mail them in again. The 5 digit number that held me up last year was the AGI (Adjusted Gross Income). I thought this was odd. I was able to file electronically this year since I had the number saved from last year's taxes.

if you don't owe them anything it is a moot point. I just filed mine online and the PIN was in there from last year but Turbo Tax has online help as well as phone support....did you google the issue?

5. The 5 digit signature ID is special for Turbo Tax, its not the 6 digit IRS code

My notes say that when I first did taxes in Turbo Tax, in 2018, "It asked for a 5 digit number, any number, as some kind of ID.", and I made one up.

In 2019 and 2020 when I did taxes, and when in the electronic filing stage, I got: "Enter a 5 digit signature ID"

I used the same one as I used in 2018.

I don't know if using the same one as in previous years is necessary...

That's all I remember.

7. Failure to file tax return on time - Nerdwallet

https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/taxes/penalty-for-failure-to-file-taxes

What is the penalty for not filing taxes?

The penalty for not filing taxes (also known as the failure to file penalty, or the late filing penalty) usually is 5% of the tax you owe for each month or part of a month your return is late. The maximum failure to file penalty is 25%. If your return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty for not filing taxes is $435 or the tax you owe, whichever is smaller.

Good news: You might not owe the penalty if you have a reasonable explanation for filing late. You can attach a statement to your return explaining your reason for filing late.

The late filing penalty is not the same as the late payment penalty. The late filing penalty punishes people who don’t turn in their Form 1040 and other important tax documents on time.

The late payment penalty punishes people who pay their taxes late. It is 0.5% of your unpaid taxes for each month your outstanding taxes are unpaid. Add interest on top of that.

The failure to file penalty usually doesn’t apply if you’re due a refund

If the IRS owes you money and you haven’t filed a tax return to claim it, get cracking! You typically have just three years to claim a tax refund. There is usually no penalty for failure to file if your tax return results in a refund.

If you are still worried about it, it's also easy to file an extension which is automatically accepted and gives you until October 15

The refund is $6. I don't care if we ever get it. I did start a ticket to see if I could fix the problem. I will see what they say.

The 5 digit # is a self created password, I guess....looks like it finished properly....fingers crossed.

Our return was rejected for the absence of the six digit numbers. I fixed that and resubmitted it. I hope your refund is fast. The six bucks is of no importance to us.
