I'm so confused. Why does my wife use Yahoo to log into her hotmail account?

I imagine that's possible. Certainly no technical reason it can't be done. It'd only be cause Yahoo didn't let you.

Hotmail is an email provider, yahoo is also, so is gmail. Email providers generally adhere to the same protocols (POP3/SMTP) which means any email client (what you're calling an app) that works with one can work with another (though it can be the case that it's 'pay' based like you have to 'upgrade' your account w/yahoo to get them allow you to access your other email accounts, just as a for instance).

I access my Yahoo Email account through the Microsoft Mail app on my Windows 10 machine. There's nothing inherently proprietary about how email works

The question is, what is the proprietary app specifically designed to work with hotmail?

From what I've been reading, "hotmail is dead", Microsoft has owned hotmail since 1997, and it's on the same servers as outlook.

I am NOT putting her on outlook.

I'm confused why her current situation is 'a problem' though? What are you trying to 'solve'?

7. An app is attempting to send a confirmation email

If it's showing up at all it's buried somewhere.

Neither of us can find it. If iit was a proper app it would be straightforward but she refuses to use anything else

8. Not sure if I'm understanding but mine changed to outlook

My hotmail account which has by far been the MOST reliable email account I've ever had went to outlook a few years ago. So within outlook, I have my original hotmail account and then a bunch of alias accounts with the outlook.com ending.

Now, my at&t mail which was associated with my internet account changed to yahoo and then currently or some crap but I have to go to Yahoo to get my mail (which I now only use for the at&t account) and I mostly get junk and spam there.

9. There is no HotMail app.

Since Microsoft owns both HotMail.com and Outlook.com, Hotmail is now hosted on the Outlook servers.

Any email client (app) can be used to access any standard email service, not always for free.

If the confirmation email is not being seen, then the most likely reason is that the email message is getting caught on the spam filters of either Outlook.com or your email client. Try the web browser interface to Outlook.com to see if you can find the message.

There is the remote possibility that the confirmation email is not actually getting sent due to problems on that server.

10. It's not being sent

I set up a dummy user and account I have control over and understand how to use. No email. Calling tech support Monday.
