Need a new email... Cox Cable is doing away with their email so a friend needs a new email. She uses Outlook. Thinking of Yahoo or Gmail. Can either or both be utilized with Outlook?

(18,122 posts)But I think Google Gmail will serve you better. Pretty sure it can be checked via Outlood client.
If your cable company is cutting off email, are they offering a half-decent webmail alternative? That may be useful until you change all your email details.

I don't happen to use Outlook, but Firefox. No problems.

(43,049 posts)She probably has an @outlook.com addtess already, or can get one. Whether she does or not, Outlook will handle her email.
I have both gmail and yahoo. Gmail seems a little more stable, but that's because yahoo has more security hoops to go through. But I use Thunderbird to consolidate four email accounts.
Makes me crazy that email doesn't have something simple like the Post Office for forwarding mail

(1,109 posts)Your friend might try one of these 'free' email providers: Yahoo (Mail), Yandex (Mail), Proton (Mail), and/or iCloud (Mail). I have used them all and have had very good luck with each service.

(5,379 posts)They did stop allowing new customers to create email accounts and existing customers cannot add new accounts but they are still supporting anything that existed as of 8/15/2019.
From their website:
"In recent years, fewer customers have taken advantage of a Cox Email account, so we decided to modify our email service to better serve our customers. As of August 15, 2019, Cox no longer offers the ability for new and existing Cox Internet customers to create new Cox Email accounts."

(13,786 posts)However, gmail is going to start charging for email.
From Hacker News:
So with Google starting to charge previously-free users, I've decided that I'd rather give my money to someone else. I'd like a provider who is likely to be around in a decade or two. Tips on moving many years of Google email to a new provider are appreciated as well!
The upside of this is that there are lots of articles discussing different (free) email providers, hopefully, with enough information to help you, and not at a high tech level. Some articles linked below.
Outlook, as you stated above is an application, and as such, should be able to connect to any mail server (that uses IMAP protocol)
Just think "Alternatives to Cox" when you see "Alternatives to Gmail"
This list seems more than enough: I made it real short. The articles have more, if you want.
Zoho Mail
Outlook
iCloud Mail
Yahoo! Mail
Don't be confused: Microsoft offers an email service called outlook.com (no doubt to capitalize on the popularity of the outlook app) Outlook.com used to be hotmail, which they bought.
Of these, the most common might be outlook.com, iCloud Mail (you don't have to be an apple user, IIRC) and Yahoo
All that I have used also work via a web browser, which helps a lot when you are away from home.
And all should work with iPhone and Android "mail" apps, or they may have their own mobile app.
Just check before switching.

If she wants to transfer existing emails from Cox to another provider, that can be really complex (see the Hacker News article and have a computer nut read it and do it)

HEY FOLKS, if I got any of this wrong, please let me know, and I'll correct it.
