Just replaced my TV with my mom's old one. Mine is dead.

I can only get a black and white picture and no sound. I get all the channels. I plugged in the 3 colored plugs. Only the red one matches colour. My hi def data box had a USB like attachment on one of the cords to be attached to the tv. The is no USB receptor on the TV. Just receptors with pins. Is it possible to get an adapter to switch a USB like end to one with pin holes on it? I want sound. I am fine with the black and white part. Kind of retro.

4. That made me laugh!!! Mostly because as a family we got colour TV in the late 70s and

cable in the mid 80s. We were always behind the game. I find the black and white actually.

7. I did that. The horizontal noise got more colorful not the images themselves.

Fortunately the horizontal noise is only when I am using the remote. The picture in black and white I can live with. The sound is what I need.

My first post! I've lurked for probably 15 years. A DU page has stayed open in my browser for years, I've just never signed up. I read your post and thought, "Well, now's the time." It feels good to be an official DU-er! About your cords:
I can't be sure but I am assuming you have either three or five "RCA" plugs to deal with. They're round with a center pin and a serrated outside connector and about 1/2 inch wide. The center pin is slightly longer than the outside connector. If these sound familiar, then look for a group of three - green, blue, and red. Those carry your video only. There's another group of two - red (again) and white. They're for left and right audio. You'll distinguish the different reds by how they're grouped - the red with the white in a pair of two is audio, the red with the blue and green is video. It's five altogether - grouped in one set of two and one set of three. It then becomes a matter of plugging everyone in their respective jacks and you just follow the colors. If you see a set of two jacks (red and white) and a set of three (green blue, and red) then you're in great shape. Just make sure to put the reds in the right place. Your picture may be B/W because you've substituted an incorrect red plug. There are adapters available if the above instructions don't solve your problem. The Red/Green/Blue plugs are called "Component" video. I just did a search for "component to usb adapter" and saw several for around ten bucks. An easier fix might be an HDMI cable - they carry audio and video. You'll need HDMI jacks on both sides of the equation but it's just one cable. Sorry to be so pedantic and repetitive - just trying to clearly communicate! Let us know if you still have questions - hope this helps.

16. Okay. I got the hdmi component adapter. I'm trying to program

the channels but don't know if I should be on channel 3 or 4. Also should I be on component, TV, HDMI1 or HDMI2? I am in component now and have a blue screen in front of me.

18. Are you adjusting the "Settings" in the TV, or in the data box?

Sometimes it can be really confusing knowing which device's settings menu is on the screen.

Since your OP said the TV did not have HDMI ports, I take it this must be the settings menu of the data box, does that sound right?

Unless the adapter itself also has settings?

If it's the TV settings and the only available input is via component (even if you used and adapter upstream), then choose the component option.

Do you mean like this? If so, that's an HDMI.
