I find mine hot after prolonged use, or if I’ve turned on the camera when it’s in my pocket, can actually feel the heat on my leg, so make sure it’s locked before pocketing

And it could be the battery heating up, does it drain battery quickly ?

3. sitting in the sun. Warns, and will shut down

4. Bad battery. Back up, shut down and repair/ replace. Especially if case is expanding.

GPS causes a lot of computing. After driving, I sometimes forget to stop navigating before putting the phone in my pocket and I then notice it is getting warm. Stopping navigating fixes that problem.

PITA, I made a major upgrade and had to check a boatload of settings.

New cameras have wi-fi, bluetooth and GPS. At least the batteries are interchangeable.
Photo sessions (especially in national parks!) can be quite extended, so energy conservation means a lot.

and keep out of sun.

Do you have Shortcuts on your phone? Newer version of iPhone system have it. if yes, there’s a trick we can build.

First possibility is a battery going bad. Look at your max charge capability. If it’s around 80% or less the end is coming fast. If it’s in the mid to upper 80%s, you’re still going to be in trouble.

Second issue is WHY your battery may be going. Often the battery gets “help” on its journey to Hades by things like an antenna that’s not functioning well. Do you have to reconnect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth sometimes? Do you have frustrating problems with phone or cellular data? That’s wearing down your battery.

Finally, do you have too many apps trying to phone home constantly? Constant backups? Fetching data? Other reasons they’re talking to the mother ship on anything from Maps to putting photos on iCloud? That’s all going to eat battery AND heat up your phone as it’s working hard in the background. I NEVER connect to iCloud for anything. I have all my app chattiness turned off. I back up my data to my desktop, along with photos, etc. I have a pretty darned uneventful existence with my phone.

Finally, in most parts of the country it is FECKING HOT right now. The harder your phone works, the more heat it creates. The hotter the outside temps are, the less heat dissipation you get. You still should never have your phone become a red-hot brick in your pocket. But once it gets hot, regardless, cooling down will be slow in summer heat.
