Locking cells in formulas

Cannot remember how to lock in a cell in a formula. My excel is to old to get help from program.
Want to lock in the row for a calculation Like = sum a1+b1
=sum a2 +b1 and so on. I thought if i put an * before the 1 in b1 it would lock the cell but that's not right?

If you want to lock both row and column, put a $ in front of both. Or it you just want one to stay put, put the $ in front of that.

So:
=SUM(A1+B$1)
=SUM(A2+B$1)
=SUM(A3+B$1)
.....

If you need help, look for info on absolute and relative references.
Hope this helps!
