Bay Area tech company Evernote lays off most staff, relocating to Europe

https://www.sfgate.com/tech/article/evernote-layoffs-moving-to-europe-18190083.php

Evernote, the note-taking app once heralded by Engadget as the “king of note-taking apps,” has laid off most of its staff as it prepares to exit the Bay Area and relocate nearly all operations to Europe.

The Redwood City-based note-taking company — which has weathered all manner of tumult over the past decade, capped off last November by the sale of the company to Italian app maker Bending Spoons — axed nearly all its employees in the United States and Chile, according to a statement from Bending Spoons CEO Luca Ferrari provided to SFGATE.

Most of the company’s “operations will be transitioned to Europe,” Ferrari said in the statement, due to the “significant boost in operational efficiency that will come as a consequence of centralizing operations in Europe.”

The layoffs come less than six months after the company eliminated 129 workers — a decision that came as a result of the company’s unprofitability making it “unsustainable in the long term," a spokesperson told TechCrunch at the time.

I exported all my notes (in enex format, which many apps can import) and won't renew. I got a "grandfather" rate. I expect that to end. You can export selected notes, all notes, or individual notebooks.

People are looking for alternatives. Hacker News has a thread about this.

Ask HN: How did you migrate off Evernote?

Alternatives mentioned include:
obsidian, Joplin, logseq (all open source, IIRC)

Dropbox Paper, Notion, DevonThink (commercial)

I have obsidian, Joplin and logseq downloaded and ready to try.

Someone mentioned that there's a way to import into Apple notes.
Not anything to brag about but it comes with MacOS and syncs.

Pretty sure that attachments don't come across.

Just be careful to save notes either on the computer or in iCloud if you have thousands of notes, like I and many others do. Mine are 20GB total.

Evernote exports notes to enex, (Evernote XHTML), and html (as a tree)
You can export notes to PDF (print to pdf) but they are named "Untitled XXXX"
I may try to script a way around this.

HTML export is cool BUT the export hangs up on the first file that has a file name that the OS can't deal with.
Each note is exported as an html file plus a directory that contains the images. So this is a real PITA.

Enex haș been around a very long time and is documented, so "competitors" have had time to create code to import it.
Joplin seems the best alternative, because it was written as an Evernote alternative, IMO.
I'll update if anything I try works.

Highly skilled tech workers are not cheap anywhere in the U.S., AFAICT.

apparently fired employees were hired here in the USA by other companies hopefully close to same or more pay. Others probably left the country.

Of course companies who want to make a quick profit seeks else where.

Silicon Valley was unique for California. The Gold Rush and weather as well.
