Can someone tell me about a portable power charger?
To charge my phone if I am out away for a day or so --away from outlets?
Is there such a thing? Is it what a "hotspot" is?
Sorry to be so ignorant. LOL

Just make sure you have the right cords for your phone.

(5,627 posts)is I had one for use during Hurricane Ian. It charged my phone several times. Also I was able to recharge it in my car when it went down. It had a cord with a usb option. Well worth it in my opinion

(6,941 posts)There are literally hundreds of these devices out there, at very low prices.
You can get them for your phone, tablet, or even your laptop.
They're great to keep on hand if you have a power failure, or are going camping or hiking.
Mobile hot spots are entirely different, and much more expensive. But then, most new smart phones are able to be used as a hot spot anyhow.

(55,736 posts)a hot spot is more like a portable router. your phone can act as one for other wifi devices to connect to internet via cell signal.

(120,821 posts)A hotspot is something different, it's basically software on your phone that allows the phone to become an internet connection for other devices.

(4,666 posts)where there is open wifi (but be careful using a public wifi connection and don't use any accounts requiring passwords).
Portable batteries can be picked up at Target, Walmart, computer stores, etc. They are large capacity (but fit in a pocket) batteries you can charge your phone up multiple times. You then have to recharge the battery by plugging it in to an outlet.

(14,652 posts)Also a 100 watt solar charger and a small Honda generator. These are good for small things like charging phones, and using small hot plates and radios. Nothing big. YMMV
Check out reviews on different power station units as the prices vary.

(13,781 posts)I have some gizmos that work fine.
1. Lantern with rechargeable 18 volt batteries that also has a USB charging port.
2. Inverter with rechargeable 40 volt batteries that powers 120 volt stuff, has a light and charges via USB.
I didn't get them for the ability to charge phones!
3. Jump start battery (yes it's barely bigger than a paperback and will jump start a car) also has USB port that should run untold hours on a full charge. This does cost a bit.
Hardware store items. And multi purpose.
I use the former to charge the phone in the car when the plug in charger makes static on the AM radio. Sports! Not RW talk radio. From 150 miles away, so static is a problem.

(91 posts)Last year I bought the Kobalt 80-volt cordless mower, chainsaw, blower and String Trimmer and one day I had an idea... extra battery+ charger.
One day I found this nice Bosch router case in the trash and brought it home, no idea what to do with it. I saw it in the corner of my closet and thinking, hmmm, I know now!
After some research, i found a way to convert 80 VDC to 12 VDC to 110 VAC safely. (DC 48V Step Down to DC 12V 30A 360W Regulator Voltage Reducer Power Converter) Yup thet should work. Then I tapped into the (+)(-) wires in the Kobalt charger tray.
Once tested I cut up the case and got it all put together.
