Does anyone know if the price to replace the speaker would be cost prohibitive? Should I just look for a new one?

(4,441 posts)Its an iPad Air2 bought like when it was brand new.
I spilled water on my iMac keyboard, it seemed to work as though I had saved it in time, but then tit stopped working altogether, so I ordered a new one and broke out this rarely used iPad and the keyboard works, but no sound.
So I am watching Netflix on the IMac with no working keyboard, and typing essays on the iPad. LOL

(38,601 posts)Go to Settings > Sounds (or Settings > Sounds & Haptics), and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider back and forth a few times. If you don't hear any sound, or if your speaker button on the Ringer and Alerts slider is dimmed, your speaker might need service. Contact Apple Support for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Or
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the control center. Look for the bell icon in the row of icons at the top of the control center. Tap on that icon until the bell is black on a grey background. Tap the arrow at the top of the control center to close it. Try an app for sound again.

(4,441 posts)I bought this while my father was in the hospital years ago so I could surf the web by his bedside. I rarely use it so I am not familiar with it at all. I really think I get so much more info on an iMac than on the phone or an iPad, but my keyboard got drowned, so...

(4,441 posts)Only a side tab of options And no bell icon whatsoever. But I just hit the speaker icon on the pop-up keyboard and I am dictating this message by my voice right now so it must be some kind of software glitch otherwise my voice wouldnt be able to dictate this message

(106,476 posts)If headphones plugged in do work, then it would be important to see if there is a setting issue. For example, do you have blue tooth enabled and possibly connecting (paired) to a set of speakers that are not functioning or the volume is turned down or are set to an auxillary pairing?
Do you get sound from alerts or any app or function within the IOS?

(4,441 posts)Now my keyboard doesnt work, only the touch screen
But when I went to sound settings and tried to change the ringtone, I got a short burst of white noise and then nothing

(106,476 posts)If you see a choice that sounds like speakers, you can disable the connection and see if that helps.

(7,576 posts)I would ask a lot of troubleshooting questions before chucking the machine. Does the iPad have a warranty? Why replace the speakers if you dont know if theyre faulty? Do a reset. Or reinstall the OS. If you havent kept the OS up to date, do an update.

(13,996 posts)You could try a reinstall, or update or restore. Depending on your situation.
Prob not worth fixing if its hardware.

(13,996 posts)Besides hearing if you get audio
The iPad detects the phones and switches off the speaker
I dont know on that particular iPad if its physically in the switch or electronic.
You might put the phones in out and suddenly have audio again

You could get blue tooth headphones or blue tooth speaker(s)

(1,927 posts)Yes, it does sound (ouch) like it has switched the built-in audio over to the headphone jack.
Some options on what to do ....
1) Use some software that has a volume control and see if it says "headphones" when you try and adjust the volume. E.g. my ancient iPad has a 'Videos' app that will show me it's sending audio to 'headphones' or 'ipad' depending on whether or not a headphone cable is plugged in. Even the Netflix app has something similar.
2) Use any kind of compatible plug/cable (e.g. an audio aux cable) and plug it in/out of the headphone jack a few times to try and dislodge any dust/dirt. See if the indicator from (1) changes! And/or borrow some headphones or earbuds, they're pretty cheap and common.
3) Do a real full power off and power on to fully reset the hardware/software. A normal "soft" reboot is sometimes not enough.
4) Examine the headphone jack (good light and magnifying glass) for dirt and/or corrosion. In any event, I'd use some rubbing alcohol and a small probe to clean it out even if there is no visible dirt. Google cleaning headphone jacks and/or review https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Headphone-Jack
5) You could take it into an Apple Retail store. Rumor has it they have some nice cleaning tools.
In any event, I suspect the iPad is far from toast. It just needs an appropriate swift kick
