Raspberry Pi in the natural world (fun stuff!)

https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/raspberry-pi-in-the-natural-world/
Because Raspberry Pi is small, affordable, and hackable, we find ourselves popping up in the wildest corners of the planet, monitoring the natural world around us. We’re everywhere from the rainforests of Borneo to the Antarctic home of Adelie penguins. We’ve even been attached to the backs of turtles. Yes, really.

Worth a read.

What is a Raspberry Pi?
https://www.raspberrypi.org/help/what-%20is-a-raspberry-pi/
The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. It’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to making spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games.

What’s more, the Raspberry Pi has the ability to interact with the outside world, and has been used in a wide array of digital maker projects, from music machines and parent detectors to weather stations and tweeting birdhouses with infra-red cameras. We want to see the Raspberry Pi being used by kids all over the world to learn to program and understand how computers work.

Interestingly, they don't say that it almost always runs a version of Linux, though there is a very long list of alternative operating systems. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi#Software
Raspbian (showing my age. Raspbian is now called Raspberry Pi OS ) is the most popular, and is an obvious derivative of Debian.

OK Computer hackers.
Get one, and go do that voodoo that you do so well!

An even older one (just collecting dust now) provided us with a way to play movies when lightning wiped out our entire home a/v system. gmplayer was a bit weird and limited -- e.g., you had to do 'gmplayer ./*.VOB' to play the contents of a dvd. It was smooth except for the half second or so when switching from one VOB to the next.

I haven't connected anything to a raspi other than typical computer peripherals, so I'm missing most of what they can do.
