'Bodacious' day at White House for young Knox baker
Knox News: Makenna Hurds tasty banana muffins got her through the White House door. While she was there, the 9-year-old delivered something extra: Hugs for President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.
. Makenna earned the invitation by being one of the winners of a recipe challenge that is part of the first ladys Lets Move! initiative to promote healthy eating.
Im at the White House! exclaimed Makenna, who has Down syndrome.
. As news photographers jostled to record the scene, Obama squatted down by Makennas seat and thanked her for coming. Makenna thanked him back, threw her arms around his neck and gave him a hug.
Her mother, Amanda Hurd, who watched with tears in her eyes, was so caught up in the moment that she forgot to pull out her own camera and take photos.
I was too busy soaking in the fact that my daughter was hugging the president, Hurd said.

Makennas winning entry was Bodacious Banana Muffins, a recipe she developed with the help of her mother and her grandmother, Suzie Warren of Knoxville. The secret, Hurd said, is to avoid using too much flour, which makes the muffins too dense.
Makenna and the other winners were invited to the White House, where some of their culinary creations were served at the Kids State Dinner. Makennas muffins made the menu, along with zucchini cornbread from Wyoming, mini-pizzas with veggies from Kansas, a veggie barley salad from Idaho and lettuce cups from Utah.
Hurd said she and Makenna will continue baking muffins so long as people continue to buy them. The muffin sales already have brought in $4,000 for the Down syndrome groups annual buddy walk proof, Hurd said, that anyone can make a difference.
Not a business, not a corporation, Hurd said. Just mommy and mammaw and Makenna in the kitchen.
Bodacious Day to the BOG~
