"That was one of the clearest, simplest and most moving presidential speeches to the nation I can imagine. It explained and it argued, point after point. Everything the president said extemporaneously at the post-G20 presser was touched on, made terser, more elegant and more persuasive.
The key points: it is an abdication of Americas exceptional role in the world to look away from the horrific use of poison gas to wipe out civilian populations and kill rebels in a civil war. Given that the world would have ignored August 21 or engaged in meaningless blather about it, Obama took the decision to say he would strike. Since such a strike was not in response to an imminent threat to our national security, Obama felt he should go to the Congress, and reverse some of the strong currents toward the imperial presidency that took hold under Dick Cheney."

Yes, its been messy. A more cautious president would have ducked it. Knowing full well it could scramble his presidency, Obama nonetheless believed that stopping chemical weapons use is worth it for the long run, and for Americans as well as Syrians. Putin understands this as well. Those chemical weapons, if uncontrolled, could easily slip into the hands of rebels whose second target, after Assad and the Alawites and the Christians, would be Russia.

If the Russians can more effectively enforce what the US wants, it is a huge step forward to give them that global responsibility, and credit. That inclination deep in Obamas bones in domestic and foreign policy is at the root of his community organizing background. Stake your ground, flush out your partners cards, take a step back and see what would make a desired result more likely without you, and seize it if it emerges. The result is one less dependent on US might or presidential power, and thereby more easily entrenched in the habits and institutions of the world.
Yes, hes still a community organizer. Its just that now, the community he is so effectively organizing is the world."

It's not about him and never has been. It is about us. He stands for us, every single time!

(305,196 posts)Obama is not stymied by caution, she. A "cautious" PBO wouldn't have gone after bin laden. He's focused and determined and makes sure he has his ducks in a row. They've been working on this for two years.
They should take a look at his history since being CIC and not waste so much time looking for angle of why this a big defeat for him. lol btw
Some are saying a big part of the audience tonight was Russia and I think they're right.

(305,196 posts)got that this was indeed "Community Organizing" on a world class level. PBO can't do everything.. he needs our help, the international community, and yes, even Vlad Putin's help. Which, I am grateful for.

(6,151 posts)Some of the best commentary I've read; kudos also to Andrew Sullivan.
I've never forgotten: Jesus was a community organizer too. Revolutionized history. Terrible crimes committed falsely in his name can't change that.
Thinking also of one of President Obama's favorite theologians, Reinhold Neihbur, whose name I can never seem to spell correctly. Regardless, it helps to understand this president if your read his own North Star as well. It totally staggers me that the same state could produce such a theologian for the ages, and then Pig Boy too. Guess which one's better known, at least among the general public. Cosmic comedy.
Speaking of which, it's time for me to get offline and address my own load of work at home. So hard to squeeze in everything before it gets too hot to breathe or to leave my signal booster in an open window. I'll be soooo glad when I don't have to guest on a friend's wi-fi signal anymore. Even during mild weather the signal's only fair at best. Frequent drops. I don't like to use bandwidth any time I think he might need it either, because why should he suffer for his generosity?
