Related: About this forumObama’s Magnificent Stealth Negotiation With Putin
The September 6 discussion between Obama and Putin, reported to have lasted 20 minutes, happened during the G-20 summit, which addressed the use of poison gas by the regime of Syrias Bashar-al-Assad on August 21, which was in violation of the 1997 international agreement prohibiting the use of chemical weapons. I cant help but wonder what really went on in those 20 minutes when Obama spoke with Putin. I have my ideas, though. The smart negotiator, in order to secure his objective, needs to make the other side envision whats in it for him, if he gives the other side what it wants. Obama is keen on avoiding military intervention in the Middle East, and he also wants Syria to honor the international law against chemical weapons. The more international support Obama gets in favor of making Syria give up its chemical weapons of mass destruction to ward off military strikes, the better for everyone. And, as a nation with its own military might, Russias Putin is an important guy to be part of Obamas support network.
Everyone wants to be the hero, and Im pretty sure, in those 20 minutes, Obama planted the seeds and painted a vision in Putins mind that the Russian leader could be exactly that. You cant deny the timing of Putins announcement, so soon after he conversed with Obama. If theres one thing for negotiators can learn from the attempts at Syria-related diplomacy over the past few days and Putins involvement in it its this. Great negotiators never take credit. Its always the other sides idea. And I suspect there was quite a bit of that going on during those 20 minutes.

(6,151 posts)Turning them into friends, or at least pulling their fangs! works much better. Even if enemies only become friends of convenience, that's a practical step forward.
Frenemies. As said so often before by those far wiser than I, "Keep your friends close. Keep your enemies closer." I'll bet somewhere in his thick skull, Putin knows he's outmatched.

(53,616 posts)Unfortunately, I just can't control my disgust. I have the same problem with my in-laws. LOL.
That's why Obama is President and folks like me aren't.

(6,151 posts)Like keeping the world safe from in-laws.
Don't get me started on mine. I've seen some lovely ones, and kids who swear by them, but mine were straight from the bowels of hell. At an age far too young to marry, though typical in its day, I thought I was getting Morris Dees. Turned out to be closer to David Duke. I don't know if I was blind stupid or he changed, but I've never run so fast in my life once my feet got in gear. It was enough to keep me single the rest of my life.
Anyway, whatever our station in life, we all have an important part to play. At my age I can do little but carry a spear, and I use it to lean on for balance more than anything else.

(305,196 posts)Yes, President Obama is the smart negotiator but some punditheads with agendas can't stand giving any credit to the President. The President is quietly taking care of business while all the ignorant rage foments around him. Clowns to left and clowns to the right.
So glad there are those who do get it and they're writing about it!
