(68,275 posts)That's one thing that strikes me about Pope Francis: he seems to be a happy man. He's not the abstemious, finger-wagging scold we've come to expect from the Papacy. John Paul II didn't seem to be a martinet, and had gravitas and dignity to spare, but he was still an ultra-conservative pillar of the Catholic establishment. About Benedict, the less said, the better.
But Francis seems to radiate joy and serenity. Christians of all flavors often speak of the joy they receive from their faith. And the Pope seems to reflect that. He has the Papacy Pope John Paul I should have had. There was another serene, compassionate man who seemed to derive joy from his faith, and from serving others. His Papacy was tragically short.
It's good to see two dynamic progressive leaders together.

'I'm A Great Admirer,' Obama Tells Pope Francis - by MARK MEMMOTT - March 27, 2014 6:45 AM
Pope Francis Gives Obama Two Medallions And 'The Joy Of The Gospel':
Pope Francis gave the president two medallions that symbolize "the need for solidarity and peace between the northern and southern hemispheres," writes Carrie Budoff Brown, one of the journalists in the "pool" that accompanied the president to the Vatican.
The pope's other gift, she reports, was a copy of his Evangelii Gaudium, or The Joy of the Gospel. Among the things the pope calls for in that apostolic exhortation: a renewed focus on helping the world's poor.
Obama told the pope he would read Evangelii Gaudium in the Oval Office.
At one point Thursday, Obama joked that the pope "is probably the only person in the world who has to put up with more protocol than me."

(7,699 posts)I just posted this on my wall and Facebook insists on tagging a friend of mine, so either it thinks she resembles Obama, or the Pope. Facebook won't let you remove the tags, either.
Hysterical.

(5,158 posts)I have respect for Pope Francis in his efforts in trying to reform the Catholic Church. Francis does have his flaws but he is a step in the right direction.

(15,703 posts)thanks for understanding that this means a lot to Catholics, symbolically and politically. These are two world leaders who share the aspirations and frustrations of ordinary people who do not want war. Whatever the shortcomings of the institutions they lead they have a vision of world peace and actively pursue it. And PBO isn't Catholic either even though he went to a Catholic elementary for two years. Somewhere there's a snap of Barack in a tie standing with his mom and a nun in front of St. Francis school on the day of his first communion. Haven't been able to find it for years but it's a classic.
