Nice Week Mr President~

President Obama boards Air Force One at Ramstein Air Base, Saturday, March 29, in Germany. Air Force One was making a scheduled refueling stop in Germany and he was using the opportunity to meet with US members of the military.

I'm so old that my first reaction to that sign is always the original meaning, Victory. It entrances me to see how well the older and newer symbolism merge. Victory by Peace.

occasions. It shows a kicking donkey and just the words 'VOTE DEMOCRATIC'. Of course the o's are the OFA symbol. I think that I'll leave those as is even after President Obama leaves office to honor him. I put in many hours of work on that sign and I expect it to serve many years. At least so long as I'm able to set it up in the yard every other year. That thing must weigh 30 lbs. Here in flyover land, it would be next to impossible to find anyone to do that for me. If other things I'm working on pan out, I might just sell out and move back north. I've been checking real estate in Elmira, NY for instance, and you can still get a decent house there for $35-50K with a pretty decent tax break too. Hard as it is to uproot old trees, I might just do it.

to a more congenial area.
You likely have many more years to live, and I have found that a support systems is more and more important in the later decades,
especially if one wants to continue living on one's own.
DU is great for providing a like-minded community, but the physical presence of people who will step forward when a hand is needed can be a great consolation.

There are a few people around here willing to help, but it's largely out of what they see as their Christian duty. I'm still the 'other'.

Except I can't resist sharing a funny story with you this evening. The UMC I visit around the corner (they know I'll stay Catholic the rest of my life) held a carry-in today, so the huge church basement gets really crowded at those events. There are 2 groups of people I tend to enjoy a lot - little kids and very old folks. So before the chow line formed I sat down next to a really sweet 87-year-old lady who's half deaf but very congenial. As soon as I sat down, she boomed, "PEOPLE REALLY GIVE YOU A LOT OF GUFF ABOUT THAT STUFF YOU WRITE IN THE PAPER, DON'T THEY?"

Couldn't help myself - I started to cackle at the top of my lungs, which made me laugh even harder. Then she said, "MY SON READS ME WHAT YOU WRITE SOMETIMES BECAUSE I CAN'T SEE TO READ ANYMORE!" Of course by now people were trying to pretend they weren't looking at us, and that set me off again. After catching my breath, I said, "Yes, ma'am, some of them do." For some reason it just turned my tickle box over. When she invited me to sit at their table, I could hardly refuse. Funny thing is, I suspect her son reads her my scribblings with a tone of disapproval if not outrage. The entire table, except for my 87-yr-old friend, spent the entire time talking about their disapproval of today's degenerate society. I just kept eating, except once in awhile I'd look up and grin at everybody just to show them I was still having a good time. I've been working on emotional detachment skills. It helps me and drives other people batty when they're trying to egg me on.

beach that I just posted on FB.

Remote, rugged, historical, and beautiful, Maha'ulepu typically has strong winds. Windsurfing and kite surfing are the most common ocean activities. Occasional snorkeling can occur during extreme calms, which mostly happen in the winter. Dirt parking lot. No facilities. http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/kauai_beaches/mahaulepu.php

(and always getting bashed for it by the other side, too)

Something just occurred to me: President Barack Hussein O'bama has shown he can handle the GOP, so why should anyone doubt that he could manage Putie just as well? When I think of all the wars and various disasters this man has kept us out of, in addition to the other good things he's produced, I kinda want to faint, it's so awesome. And that's a word not at all wasted on him. He will be a hard act for even our best to follow. As (ahem) 'healthy' as the Irish ego runs, I'd never want to follow him in office. It would be worse than following U2 on stage.
