Update re Brownsville: Vidal meets the President

Cross-posted (also put in GD but apparently happy news is not of interest in that forum). So, I'm bringing it here.

I first wrote about Brandon (Humans of New York), Vidal, and Ms. Lopez here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10026129259

Recently they were all on Ellen's show and now this. It has been an amazing story.

after all this is not about Vidal refusing to be vaccinated ... but it is a cool story none the less. A story about a school in a bad neighborhood & progressive people around the world chipping in to help these at-risk students visit Harvard, have a educational summer program, and start a scholarship program (there are 5 more days of fund-raising I believe - but the total has surpassed 1.2 million at this point).

This week I have been reading stories about republican governors not only discouraging science with rhetoric, but actually proposing budgets with large slashing in many areas of education. While folks reminisce about their bouts with measles we are having the rugs pulled out from under us in this country: the race to the bottom is accelerating. But at least in this one corner of NYC I see some hope for the future.

“You don’t do things alone. Nobody does things alone. Everybody always needs support. For a young man like you, you should never be too afraid or too shy to look for people who can encourage you or mentor you. There are a lot of people out there who want to provide advice and support to people who are trying to do the right thing. So you’ll have a lot of people helping you. Just always remember to be open to help. Never think that you know everything. And always be ready to listen.”
