President Obama found another chance to show off his singing voice Thursday, busting out a rendition of the theme song from The Jeffersons. While touring the Treme neighborhood in New Orleans, the president met a woman who introduced herself as Weezie.
"Weezie? Really, like
Weezie? Obama asked. Like in Sanford and Son?
The woman corrected the president, saying hes thinking of The Jeffersons and sang the iconic first words of the shows theme song, Movin on up.
Obama joined in and continued the lyric: Movin on up, to the East Side as a nearby man clapped along briefly.
The president was in New Orleans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the citys recovery since the storm. He praised the Big Easy as a city that is slowly, unmistakably, together, moving forward.
Obama has a history of breaking into song. He led a rousing rendition of Amazing Grace in June at the funeral of a victim of a mass shooting at a predominantly black church in South Carolina. He also sang a short version of Al Greens Lets Stay Together at a 2012 fundraiser.
