Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, the current Governor of Florida, is calling for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard to block Mexican ports to help stem the flow of deadly fentanyl into the U.S. through the Southern Border.
Of course, the United Nations Law of the Sea prohibits such an action under the principle of freedom of navigation.
Governor DeSantis announced the plan during a campaign stop in Eagle Pass, Texas, on Monday, where he touted his border security plan.
DeSantis says Mexican cartels are importing precursor chemicals on ships to produce synthetic fentanyl in Mexico which is then shipped across the border into the U.S.
Well mobilize the Coast Guard and the Navy to interdict precursor chemicals, Gov. DeSantis said Monday.
