Nemesio 'El Mencho' Oseguera is the leader of the Jalisco New Cartel, considered by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as the most powerful cartel in Mexico.
The United States government is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction.
Recently, Mexican authorities raided the brick-layered, roofless abandoned home where five students were reportedly killed after they were kidnapped by the cartel.
El Mencho, who also goes by the alias 'Lord of the Roosters,' was born on July 17, 1964 in Michoacán, Mexico. He is one of for brothers who grew up poor in the town of Aguililla and stopped attending school after fifth grade to work with his family growing avocados.
His introduction to the business of narcotics came at the young age of 14, when he was hired to guard marijuana crops. He eventually wanted a better future for himself and quit the business, illegally migrating to the United States in the 1980s.
El Mencho settled in San Francisco area and was just 19 years old when he ran into trouble with the law in May 1986 when he was apprehended for possession of stolen goods and a loaded gun. He became a father for the first time two months after his arrest when his wife gave birth to Jessica Oseguera.
