Black Congresswoman Shut Out of Cuba Hearing
On Thursday January 18, hardline Cuban American Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) told Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) she couldn't join a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing on Cuba.
Salazar accuses Cuba's government of stifling free speech while doing the same to Lee, a Black woman who advocates lifting the embargo.

(1,732 posts)In the old Cuba, the European looking Cubans were more likely to be wealthy and privileged. They held the darker Cubans in the lower stratum of society. Not all that different from our own plantation society pre civil war.

(162,376 posts)Colossal vicious move by the anti-Cuba group.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen admitted long ago that her family expected to stay in Miami only long enough for Washington to seize control of Cuba again, and install another puppet "president" like Batista, after which they would all return.
It was their racist, power-mad big-fish-in-a-small-bown class which created the living hell the people of Cuba had to overthrow in the first place. Putting them all back in charge would inevitably produce the same result.
Salazar is odious.
It was amazing to see Debbie Wasserman-Schultz supporting Barbara Lee, considering how tight she has been for years since her days in the Florida Congress with Mario Diaz-Balart, and served with Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Lincoln Diaz-Balart in Washington for years. When I saw her at the beginning of the video I was sure she was going to stand with the Florida anti-Cubans. She somewhat earned some respect for what she did with Barbara Lee today.
Doesn't that nasty, childish "communist" crap get old? Don't know how sane people can stand them.
I'm so glad the country has Barbara Lee as a shining example over the years of a person who will stand against everyone, if necessary, for the right way to live, even though we have seen everyone BUT Barbara in Congress crumble all around her, as they did for George W. Bush's decision to invade Afghanistan and bomb the bejesus out of everything just because he, as another idiot trash Republican President, could get away with it.
Barbara has been attacked wildly by the most vicious the lunatics have to offer. She has been heroic, she hasn't given up, not ever. Get enough hard-right Cuban-Americans after her, we easily could see them start dragging out their car-bombs, putting C-4 all over the place again, as they have done for years. I hope continually for her survival in such a deadly society.
Thank you for the latest, Marcus IM.

As the video report states, Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz was welcome because she espouses the same inhumane policy of sanctioning Cuba as does rightwingnut Salazar.
Congresswoman Barbara Lee supports the rational concept of negotiations and normalization with our Cuban neighbors - who have done nothing to harm the USA. After all, the US is close allies with other nations run by butchers and dictators, so, even if the claim of a Cuban dictatorship were to be true, it's a hypocritical policy.

I can remember I found photos of one of his victims in a convincingly dead state after his boiling, and also a photo of his mother, holding the picture in her hands. Apparently that lunatic was A-OK with U.S. Republicans.
Uzbek mother who publicised 'boiling' torture of son gets hard labour

The elderly mother of a religious prisoner allegedly boiled to death by Uzbekistan's secret police has been sentenced to six years in a maximum security jail after she made public her son's torture.
Fatima Mukhadirova, 63, a former market vegetable seller, is the mother of Muzafar Avazov, who died in the notorious Jaslik high security jail in 2002. She was convicted of attempting to "overthrow the constitutional order".
An Uzbek judge yesterday said she had "set up an underground cell of women propagating the ideas of [banned Islamic fundamentalist group] Hizbut Tahrir". The secret police had found "incriminating" pamphlets in her flat, a common occurrence in arrests of group members.
The British ambassador to Tashkent, Craig Murray, last night told the Guarwadian: "This is appalling. She took photographs of her son's corpse which she gave to the British embassy. The Foreign Office sent them to the University of Glasgow pathology department. Their forensic report said the body had clearly been immersed [in boiling water] because of the tide marks around the upper torso." He said that Ms Mukhadirova's continuing campaign seemed to explain why she had been targeted by the authorities. She now had a sentence of hard labour. "The chances of her surviving that are very limited," he said.
Uzbek prison authorities maintain that Mr Avazov died after inmates spilled hot tea on him. But the forensic report said that his teeth had been smashed and his fingernails torn out. His body was covered in burns.
Mirzakayum Avazov, Ms Mukhadirova's youngest son, said: "My mother was simply trying to defend her sons and looked for justice. She only wanted those guilty of Muzafar's death to be punished."

What a shame there are so few US Americans willing to put in the time doing their research homework learning something beyond the total whitewashed story of US history taught in all primary and secondary US schools. It's all there for anyone willing to wake up and start learning after receiving his or her public "education."

(162,376 posts)If they find any possible connection between any socialist and a Democrat they will always, in every instance, build elaborately nasty bogus claims against both the socialist and the Democrat, while knowing absolutely nothing about either one.
Speaking of relationships between US Americans and actual dictators, what sane person can ever forget learning about George W Bush's support for Uzbekistan's dictator, Islam Karimov, who boiled his "enemies" alive, presumably to psyche out anyone who might consider trying to go against him. Will never forget learning about that.

(3,001 posts)I can't, for the life of me, understand why the Dem party puts forth candidates who feature the exact same platforms on Cuba as the GOP/tRumpsters. When Dems offer the same platform as the repukes, voters will vote for the repuke.
It's as if they deliberately ignore the 50% of the Cuban resident aliens and Cuban-Americans who want some or full normalization with Cuba so their families can live better lives.
Anyone want to tell me why the Democratic Party would oppose a system that featured universal healthcare and universal education, universal basic wage, etc etc?
Because of this ... Florida is now a Red State - thanks to losing Miami-Dade county where the concentration of rightwing Cuban "exiles" persists.
