Leader of Mexico missing persons group shot dead

By AFP

The president of an organization dedicated to searching for missing persons in Mexico was shot dead on Thursday, a local human rights commission said.

Angelica Leon, who led the group “Union and Strength for Our Disappeared,” was killed in the town of Tecate, said the Human Rights Commission of the northern state of Baja California.

The rights body called on the Public Prosecutor’s Office to “carry out the necessary investigations to determine the origin of this aggression and avoid impunity.”

It added that it had opened its own investigation to examine the actions of authorities in the case, which it said was an “attack on a human rights defender”.

Leon’s brother, Jose Juan Vazquez Leon, has been missing since June 27, 2018.
