Suspected homicide of politician shocks Antigua and Barbuda

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/05/suspected-homicide-of-politician-sends-shockwaves-across-antigua-and-barbuda-asot-michael

The prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda has expressed “deep shock and sadness” after the suspected homicide of one of the country’s most prominent MPs.

Asot Michael, 54, was found unresponsive with what appeared to be “multiple puncture wounds about his body” at his home just after 8am, according to police on the Caribbean island. The representative for the country’s St Peter constituency was declared dead at the scene.

Describing Michael’s death as “a profound loss to his family, friends, and constituents”, the prime minister, Gaston Browne, said in a statement: “On behalf of the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, I extend my sincere condolences to his son, Nigel; his sisters, Marie-Therese and Soriah; his extended family; and the many friends who are grieving his loss.”

The country’s commissioner of police, Atlee Rodney, said his force had launched a homicide investigation

Ascot Michael
The Speaker of the Antigua and Barbuda House of Representatives, Sir Gerald Watt, has suspended Asot Michael, the Parliamentary Representative for the constituency of St Peter, for the next three sittings.

According to Sir Gerald, the legislator was displaying “hooliganism” behaviour.

The chain of events started when Michael took issue with a comment made by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, while Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin was making a presentation on a Bill.

Michael repeatedly argued loudly with the Speaker, who had warned him several times that he would not tolerate his actions much longer.

“Move the member for St Peter out now,” the Speaker said to the Sergeant at Arms saying “If you need extra help, get it and get him out of here.”

Michael then yelled across the floor that the Speaker should retire because he is biased.

Antigua police have charged a man over the fatal stabbing of a member of parliament in his seaside home.

Police on the Caribbean island charged Alexta Francis, 26, two days after the landscaper was arrested and questioned about the killing of Asot Michael. Francis was due to make his first appearance in court on Monday.

It wasn’t immediately clear where Francis was being held on Saturday.
