The president has set aside a serious chunk of time for preparation after being faulted for underestimating the importance of his first debate with Romney. He'll be hunkered down in Williamsburg, Va., from Saturday until Tuesday rehearsing with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, acting as a proxy for Romney.

I was not aware of this until late last night. Here the story - I was walking down an isle of my local supermarket looking for canned tomatoes around 9:30 last night. Only a very tall well-dressed gentleman and myself were in the isle. Standing a few feet away, I glanced at him sideways and did a double take. "Excuse me, sir, do people tell you that you look like John Kerry?"
He turned and looked directly at me and said, "All the time."
"OMG, YOU ARE JOHN KERRY!!"
He smiled a big grin and said, "Yes, I am."
It was a surreal moment. Sen. Kerry in a supermarket, shopping for his own groceries by himself??!! I thought I must be dreaming. Remember, I did not know that he and the President were going to rehearse together, much less be here in Williamsburg!
I ran and found my hubs in another isle and brought him over and made a couple of camera shots. I cannot link/ post those pics because they're online only on my FB page and on DU's FB page.
True story. Do you think RMoney has ever shopped for his own groceries in the last 20 yrs, other than that photo-op?
Btw, my local, cheap Food Lion does not carry many Heinz products and Sen. Kerry asked me about that.
(I've cross-posted this from my original post on Politics 2012.)
Folks I can finally post one of the pics!

(90,540 posts)Kerry always told where the person says to him "doesn't that make you mad" at people thinking he was Kerry.
i would love to meet Kerry in this way. preferably without many people around in some setting like this since it seems like it would be more fun and you can ask them almost anything even non political related.

(8,515 posts)have happened with Edwards by his side. I think he would have tried to smuggle her into the naval observatory. Remembering Elizabeth fondly.

(2,411 posts)LOL! Duppers, I've seen enough JK appearances that, like J17, I thought he was going to deliver that famous punchline!
Person recognizing JK: Do people ever tell you you look like John Kerry?
JK: All the time.
PRJK: Kinda makes ya mad, doesn't it?
I totally LOVE your story, especially your adorable reaction, and I bet he loved it, too. And he asked you about Heinz products? And people think he's stiff and elitist. He's hilarious!
Your post makes my day, thanks for posting it here!!!
And I still would love to see him "playing" Romney in debate prep...

There were a few other dems in the store who recognized him too. I ran into a biracial couple (not really typical for this red state) and I asked them if they had seen him. "Oh, YES indeedy." The gal was just as excited and star-struck as I was.

(28,246 posts)I immediately knew it was him when I saw him face-on. I must have opened my mouth too...I just don't remember.
It was one of those so-unexpected moments that I could have been knocked over with a feather. I was glad my hair was clean and I had some makeup on.
My hubs shook his hand while I grabbed my phone to make pics.

(9,688 posts)All fingers, toes, everything crossed that Sen. Kerry's illustrious student is working diligently, getting enough sleep, and heeding Sen. Kerry's wisdom on this vital task so that he is Totally In The Groove on Tuesday.
As you know , the weather is fabulous in VA right now. . hopefully that is keeping everyone in a really good and productive mood.
