I didn't realize that it was the day for that. Public tv was running a series about being freed from the concentration camps. It rips out my heart to remember, but I watch in solidarity.

He actually had distant relatives who perished in the Holocaust - something he didn't know until around 2003 when the Boston Globe researched his father's family, finding that Kerry's grandparents had been Jewish and had converted and changed the family name before immigrating to the US where Kerry's father was born.

This is something that likely will give him at least a small amount of additional credibility with Israel on a personal level. He was the first US Senator to visit Gaza - which is something that makes him more acceptable than most Americans to the Palestinians. Of course, the likelihood of improving the situation there - much less real peace - rests with the two countries wanting that more than what they perceive is the advantage of the status quo.

I care that they are being mistreated on a wide scale. I hope a peaceful solution can be worked out.
