Sounds delicioso.. except for the meat part for me.. but, hey I can see how that would be tasty!!

(87,525 posts)You can cut out 700 calories by leaving out the meat. Still sounds yummy. He does have to be diplomatic you know... Though Theresa may have a word or two for him when he gets home!
Greatest SOS since Clinton!
Thanks Cha~

(15,438 posts)The way I know how to make them at home is, I buy the spices at our local Dutch store, sprinkle it over some shredded lamb, chicken, or beef and use PAM to fry it up, take out the pita bread, stuff if with the juicy hot meat, add tomatoes, iceberg lettuce (you can add fresh red onions, too), and a dollop of garlic sauce (which you can make from scratch but I buy it from Calve }. YUM!
That sandwich is HEAVEN! It's a big hit during our summer barbecues.

I'd never heard of this sandwich before.. but, I have now! Is not Pita bread one of the best ways to eat a sammy.. or what!
that Calve garlic sauce sounds good and handy.. the humous and tahini in the recipe from the article sound delicious, too. Had humous last night on Manna bread with poi.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)I love humous although it's a little bit bland - so I add some spices. to make it perfect for me.
You're welcome, Cha. I hope you'll have a look at the link I've posted in a post just under yours where you can get the Calve or Remia brand garlic sauce and the spices for shawarma {the Dutch call it "shoarma"}. It lasts a long time.

(59,942 posts)I will look for Calve. Is it a packaged alioli (garlic mayonnaise) - if so - another thank you because I didn't know you could get it without making it and - since a trip to Spain - I think I am addicted!
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)Yes, it's a thick mayonaise type of sauce and deeeeelicious! If you don't have a Dutch food store close by, you can order it at Holland's Best: http://www.hollandsbest.com/mixes_sauces/calve_sauces.php This store is located in the Bay Area in Northern California. I go to the Dutch Bakery in Ontario, CA: http://www.yelp.com/biz/dutch-bakery-and-variety-foods-ontario
This thread had reminded me that we haven't had any shawarma since, well, a long time, so that's what we're having for dinner tonight! My daughter is overjoyed.
Chicken and lamb. I LOVE lamb for shawarma {the original shawarma uses goat meat} because it gives it that exotic taste. My husband and daughter both love chicken for shawarma. I avoid using turkey because the last time I used it, everyone falls asleep not long after consuming it. lol
karynnj
(59,942 posts)I will look to see if any of the local stores have it here, but if not I will use your link.
Cha
(305,438 posts)I'm sure it's delicious.. reminds me of Horsey Sauce I use to buy when I lived in San Diego, CA. And, making me more than a little bit hungry for lunch right now.
So, what they say is true about turkey.. I know I take Tryptopan to help me fall asleep at beddy bye time.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)And yes, based on anecdotal evidence provided to me every time I cook a turkey dinner, it is absolutely true what they say about it.

(59,942 posts)In NJ, we lived near a Palestinian place that had excellent food - including shawarma. My husband and I would often get the chicken shawarma and their veggie salad platter (tabbouleh, hummus, baba ganous (sp??) and salad) - and then split them.
I like that he was eager to be out meeting ordinary people and showing respect, interest and enjoyment in their culture. It is messy to eat - though our SoS had lots of practice eating messy, high calorie, yummy things from his various campaigns.
Cha
(305,438 posts)is one of my favorite treats. which I've made at home. The Palestinian place in NJ sounds very handy!
That's one of the perks of SOS Kerry's job.. being respectful and enjoying other people's Culture, including their cuisine(oh darn).
And, another part of SOS John Kerry's job is of course..
