Soldiers wear protective gear and I am sure a lot of thought goes into the various trade offs. As to hockey players, I don't think they are "made" to wear facemasks - and obviously Kerry did not in the game with his friends and family.

Here is a cute video on it - where the person who was the "cup keeper" spoke of how it showed the "kid" in the powerful Senator:

Kerry also called in to speak with Costas on NHF.com:

Interview about the charity hockey game next Sunday:

I must say that I learned more about hockey Sunday afternoon than ever before in my life..LOL! (Agnostic/clueless about most sports . Very fast moving game though! I'm afraid most of my pics are rather blurry as most of the players--including and perhaps especially the Senator himself--were moving FAST! But here they are, the most recent pics on my Twitter yFrog album :

JK's team, "The Lawmakers" won! JK looked SO proud of their trophy--he was grinning from ear to ear! Fortunately, he made sure to wear protective head/face gear this time though I will point out that he took it off at every given break and opportunity! Always either off the ice or out of the game while doing so though!

I went with MBS--was so great sharing in this experience with a fellow Kerrycrat friend! We had an amazing late lunch/early dinner in adjacent Chinatown afterward! Thank you again, MBS, for a wonderful Sunday!

JK Bio from the program:

Employer: Constituents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Favorite NHL Tema: Boston Bruins
Favorite Band: Rolling Stones
Favorite Meal: Spaghetti Bolognese
Favorite Movie Character: Forrest Gump

WaPo article has a couple of nice photos, too (I took my own photos, but (a) they were farther away and (b) it will take me a while to get any of them uploaded, so I'm glad that WaPo posted these) . About 600 people there, we sat really close-- about 3 rows back. Money went to a good cause: Thurgood Marshall College Fund. WaPo was correct that there was a near-brawl at the end. JK was not involved : ) (if memory serves, he wasn't even on the ice at the time. Other factoids: "Team Lobbyists" had two women on the team.

Once a hockey nut, always a hockey nut.
During his last hockey game on New Year’s Eve, John Kerry suffered a broken nose and black eyes so colorful that he walked around wearing sunglasses. At 68 years old, you’d think Massachusetts’s senior senator might consider giving up the game to concentrate on gentler pursuits.?.?.like, say, politics.H-E-double-hockey-sticks, no.

“I’m not ready to hang it up,” he told us Sunday. “I love it. It’s a great game and I’m able to still skate — I’ve got two artificial hips and I’m still out there.”

Kerry couldn’t wait to get on the ice Sunday for the 4th Congressional Hockey Challenge, which pits lawmakers against lobbyists. His enthusiasm for the sport earned him mad props from all the other players, even his opponents. “I hope I’m able to get out of bed at his age, much less play hockey,” said UPS’s Nick Lewis.

The lawmakers wanted payback: They won the inaugural game in 2009, then lost to the lobbyists two years in a row. “The pressure’s huge, so this is a revenge game,” said Kerry. Each roster boasted a mix of big names and young ringers (i.e., staffers with serious ice skills.)
. . . The winning team happily passed the silver trophy — none happier than player #1.
“Senator Kerry is an inspiration,” lobbyist Lewis told us. “If we ever say we’re too old for it, we might as well pack it in.”

SO retweeted both of those, lol. Good for JK! Maybe Lewis meant it as a compliment but I was like He's in his 60's, not 80's or 90's though I have a feeling that he will be as spry or nearly so even then....the man never seems to age! He really seems, physically and mentally, at least 10-20 years younger. He is amazing, all around! But then again, you all knew that. lol
