JK to fill in for Obama in Asia

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20131004/as--apec-us-kerry/?utm_hp_ref=politics&ir=politics

Nearly a decade after his unsuccessful 2004 bid for the White House, John Kerry is getting the chance to be presidential as he fills in for U.S. President Barack Obama at heads of state summits in Asia.

The secretary of state learned Friday while flying from Japan to Indonesia that he would lead heavyweight U.S. delegations to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Bali and the East Asia Summit in Brunei.

Kerry had been in Tokyo for security talks and was already planning to attend both meetings but only in a supporting role for Obama. He found out earlier in the week that he would be visiting Malaysia and the Philippines in Obama's stead next week. . .

because the GOP is ridiculously blocking things, AP feels the need to talk about the 2004 campaign. WTF? Should they not be outraged that these silly games are preventing the president to do his job?

(and I agree with you that media snark is a constant frustration), I AM glad that Sec. Kerry will be able to step in for President Obama. I can't think of anyone better to represent the President in this situation. We are very lucky to have him do so.

Although I was sorry to lose Kerry as a senator, I have come to see now how much his diplomatic talents are needed , for our country and for the world. He is proving to be a truly superb diplomat, one who seems bound to make a mark as one of our most creative, and effective secretaries of state. I always appreciated the depth of his experience in foreign policy, so I can't say that I'm surprised: but it's nevertheless such a pleasure to see him Show His Stuff .
(also, given the sorry state of the Senate, he must be overjoyed to be in a position where he can truly make a difference!)

He has often been in meetings with Presidents - as has every American SoS.

In all the articles I have seen, few have any insight into how much experience Kerry has had with Asia. I suspect that we have never had a SoS with anywhere near his experience here.

He was on and at some point chaired one of the Asian sub committees of the SFRC in his first two terms as Senator.

He chaired the POW/MIA committee and negotiated the interface with Vietnam for it and, with one of his SFRC staffers worked with the Clinton administration on the restoration of relations.

He proposed the method that was successfully used by the UN to get war crimes trials in Cambodia.

Lugar spoke of how creative and helpful he was as a very young Senator when they oversaw the elections in the Philippines that ousted Marcos.

It bothers me that the pivot to Asia seemed mostly to be about the Geitner/Clinton TPP. I am not sure that it is to OUR good for this to be moved ahead. What I suspect is that the Obama administration made the decision that not enough was likely to come out of these conferences to balance the complaint that he was outside the US at a point of crisis. If they really believed that Obama's presence would make an enormous difference than I think he would still be going. (ie I think Obama would still have gone to St Petersburg - as there were HOT issues that could (and were) impacted by the that summit. )
