I dont think about a legacy. I think about getting the job done as well as I can, and history and other people will take care of the rest of it, says Kerry, photographed at the State Department in Washington, D.C.

Through one international crisis after another, Americas Secretary of State is waging a marathon campaign of high-stakes diplomacy.

During this jolting period Kerry will seem to be everywhere at once, engaging in negotiations, jousting with his foreign counterparts, and struggling to pull off small victories before jumping back on his plane. I dont think there has ever been a Secretary of State who has thrown himself into the job with as much verve and conviction as this guy has, says Strobe Talbott, a deputy Secretary of State under President Clinton and now the president of the Washington think tank the Brookings Institution as well as a Kerry adviser. If he cant get a workable and acceptable compromise on a dispute, its very hard to imagine anybody who can.
Kerry practices just the sort of vigorous diplomacy President Obama spoke about at West Pointbut his relentlessness, especially on issues as seemingly intractable as Israeli-Palestinian peace, has been bruising at times. Does America wield the influence in the world that it once did? Critics say that Kerrys go-for-broke diplomatic style raises just this questionand that he has wasted time on problems that the U.S. cannot solve; supporters say that if Kerry achieves a breakthrough in even one of his major endeavorssay, a nuclear deal with Iranhe could be one of the most important Secretaries of State in recent history.
Theres a lot going on, Kerry acknowledges when I meet with him over the summer in his office at the State Department. But when you have four or five flare-ups at the same time, youve still got to talk to people; youve got to sit down with them face-to-face, look in their eyes, grab the problem, and work through it. So were managing. We can multitask.

But he does reflect on the past. You know, obviously, losing the presidency is not the option of first choice, he says and laughs, as if awed by the memory. But you cant get lost in it. I said, I am not going to make this the defining moment of a life of involvement in public service and caring about things. I was a senator and had a lot I was interested in; I have a great family, a great life, and I have nothing to complain about. So I went right back in and started kicking. . . .
I love it, I really enjoy this job, its a great job, he continues. And I am excited. Look, we got the deal on chemical weapons {in Syria}; weve got Iran talking. Weve got the Middle East people talkingweve made a lot of progress there, and I believe well get back to talking. He cocks his head pointedly, with a faint smile. I am not finished.

(2,157 posts)I BELIEVED & WILL PROBABLY ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT JOHN F KERRY WOULD HAVE MADE A DAMN GOOD PRESIDENT, A REPRESENTATIVE OF FOREIGN RELATIONS ACROSS THE WORLD, WHO HAS TIME & TIME AGAIN PUT WORKING AMERICANS' FIRST, ENSURING THE SAFETY & SECURITY, AND PERHAPS BEST OF ALL...SOS JOHN KERRY IS IN FACT THE "REAL DEAL".
HE HAS SERVED HIS COUNTRY HONORARILY & SAVED LIVES, ALL THE WHILE RISKING HIS OWN IN THE JUNGLES OF VIETNAM, NOT ONLY DEFYING DEATH, BUT STARING DEATH IN THE FACE BECAUSE JOHN F KERRY, AS CAPTAIN OF THAT SWIFT BOAT REFUSED TO LEAVE EVEN 1 MAN BEHIND.
THAT IS WHAT WE NEED IN A LEADER, THAT IS WHAT WE NEED IN A PRESIDENT. JOHN KERRY HAS BEEN TRIED & TRIED AGAIN, YET NOT ONCE HAS HE WAVERED ON HIS POSITIONS, WHETHER FOREIGN OR DOMESTIC.
I KNOW ITS A LONG SHOT BUT, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE KERRY WIN THE WHITE HOUSE IN 2016. JOHN KERRY HAS INSPIRED ME TO DO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS WITH MY LIFE, AND FOR A MAN WHO HAS SPENT NEARLY HIS ENTIRE LIFE FIGHTING FOR OUR COUNTRY & FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOMS...
SAY WHAT YOU WISH, BUT IN 2004 AT THE AGE OF 14 I JUST KNEW FROM THE VERY FIRST MOMENT HE SPOKE THAT BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS AWAITED JOHN F KERRY, & THE HOPE IS THERE, & I AM PROUD TO CALL HIM MY HERO....
THANK-YOU SOS JOHN KERRY, AND KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU HAVE DONE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE.

(2,157 posts)If you have any more great pics of John Kerry ecspecially any during the 2004 campaign, I would greatly appreciate it. At the age of 14 I can remember vividly my Dad took the day off of work, and he let me leave early from school on October 19, 2004 to attend a John Kerry Rally in Dayton, Ohio located at a baseball stadium. The stadium was absolutely packed, and my Dad got us in on the ballfield so close to the stage that John Kerry actually looked me in the eye.
It was, is and always will be the best day of my life & an experience that really inspired me to become a sponge about politics, I was soo eager to learn everything I could as much as I could about the Democratic Party and it really instilled in me that from that day forward I devoted myself to the Democratic Party & John Kerry.....& THATS HOW I FOUND DEMOCRATICUNDERGROUND.COM, AND i ALWAYS FELT LIKE FAMILY TO DU SINCE THEN....
