Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, 2004 presidential nominee John Kerry and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley have been added to the list of speakers for the Democratic National Convention.
Democrats gather Sept. 4-6 in Charlotte to formally nominate President Obama for a second term.
Other speakers announced today include two close friends of Obama: Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and former Virginia governor Tim Kaine, who gave up his post as Democratic National Committee chairman to run for the U.S. Senate.
...
Deval Patrick will speak too (yeah), as well as Liz Warren. It seems that MA will be very well represented,
(Silly question: will the GOP be foolish enough to give a speaking role to Scott Brown. Until now, they have chosen people who are reasonably articulate, but Scottie, really?)

(1,418 posts)?? they sure get the most dynamic speakers, eh?

(27,315 posts)Never heard Strickland, so I cannot say. But, if you think Deval Patrick is boring, you probably never heard him speak.
Iggy
(1,418 posts)Mr. Patrick.. yes, great speaker, agreed.

I assumed you had listened to Kerry make campaign speeches, but apparently you have not.
It is actually funny to think the media continue to follow their follow-the-pack mentality and do not see anything weird in writing 10 or 12 times the same piece saying they are surprised that Kerry is a good speaker. May be at some point they could start to realize how ridiculous these articles are, but I will not hold my breath on that, but I suggest you listen to some of his actual speeches.
to his campaign speeches... Yaaaaaaaaaawwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.
that's why i said he's boring.
if he's so dynamic.. why did he lose in 2004??

(90,540 posts)and how they prop up the republicans.
why isn't Obama who is clearly a far better speaker than romney not winning by a wider margin ? you think it has to do with ROmney being such a great speaker ?
Kerry is a great speaker. he may not be like Obama but he still does a good job. when it comes to debates Kerry is the best.

(8,945 posts)of and for people that like and support John Kerry. To come here and post these infantile comments is like being a guest in somebody's house and spitting on the floor.

(59,942 posts)when he gave his first response. He likely saw it when it was new and on the page that shows the newest posts. The rest were responses to responses to his posts.

(59,942 posts)who confuse noise for principled action. Here is something he posted in outrage after Weiner had to step down for his idiotic action. Franken has not VOTED to Kerry's (or Durbin's ) left, it is more his pre Senate actions that I think put him on this list. He appears to have been a Kuchinch person.
The fact is there were good reasons for ANY Democrat not to defend Weiner.

But, if you look at his posts in this thread, it is clear that he is informed and smart - so, I think that putting the links up that I did could have made him relook at things - but it obviously did not.
( So, the only benefit was that I had never seen or forgot the NYT piece summarizing all the good 2008 praise. So, I am glad I looked for the other NYT article that I remembered. )

(90,540 posts)would see it so i'm glad for the informed responses to him.

(59,942 posts)I have been lucky enough to have heard him speak 4 times - twice at Faneuil Hall in 2006 where he was incredible and got endless standing 0ovations - and deserved them. The first time was Kerry speaking to a smallish (500) crowd in NJ trying to get people to volunteer (or at least vote for Corzine). Even in the wake of having lost the year before, he was charming, charismatic and as good as anyone I have ever seen in speaking one to one with the people there.
Check out the NYT review of his 2008 speech at the convention - http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/kerry-hits-it-home/
The part of the speech that this reviewer liked best was actually derived from a speech he gave at Fanueil Hall (one of the two I saw) that was on the right and responsibility to dissent - which he gave on the 35th anniversary of his speaking before the SFRC. (If you question his ability to speak, watch this http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/WarinIraq7
He was not alone - here is a summary. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/the-kerry-surprise/
here is the video itself -

(10,117 posts)...actually listen to Senator Kerry speak.
I have heard him...televised, online and in person...and every time he was dynamic, passionate and knowledgeable. He will be a FANTASTIC addition to the Democratic Convention.

(59,942 posts)The NYT even said it was the best non- acceptance speech in several decades. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CDoQtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DdO2PAm4iCtE&ei=CZIyUMrgCISG0QH9xYHgAg&usg=AFQjCNFn51pofSi8cSiise-ToMUHOc0M5g
Deval Patrick is incredibly good as is O'Malley. Warren is very good - good enough taht Obama borrowed some of her most famous words.
Who were you looking for?

(18,158 posts)The MSNBC crew said he blew the roof off, or something like that.
Unfortunately I believed the schedule (figured if anything they'd be running late) and tuned in a few minutes late so I didn't hear the whole thing. The part I heard was pretty damn good. I'll be looking for the vid on youtube later.

I don't know about you, but this DNC is the best TV I've seen in ages.

(10,117 posts)...too. This IS the best TV in ages. I hope it is reaching people who aren't politcal junkies like us.

(15,239 posts)The DNC and um, well, the MTV VMA awards. Both live events where something unexpected may happen. If you recall a couple years ago, the President ended up commenting on the VMA awards and he had to be bleeped so sometimes, it is news. (if you recall it was about that certain hip hop artist who inexplicably said one sentence that represented the "worst moment" in W's presidency -- worse than 9/11 ...) So don't count the VMA's out!
Enjoy the speeches everyone!!

I had missed the first couple of minutes yesterday. I feel emotionally drained after the last couple of days . Quite a convention...
