In the SF Bay Area, the real elections are in the Democratic primaries. For the most part, Republicans don't win here. Even at the local level, in a city as big as San Jose, CA, I believe there is only one registered Republican city council member, and he's retiring soon (I say registered, because city council elections are non-partisan in California).

Any advice for those on DU who already live in very "safe" Democratic areas?

I would suggest you target your spare dollars at districts in your state that are not safe. Getting rid of that grandstanding idiot Issa would seem to be a priority. He's making your whole state a laughing stock.

If you've got more than a few spare dollars, invest them in safe GOP districts in other states. Make assholes like Joe Barton spend more than they expected to and drain their coffers. Let the plutocracy know that while they can contribute unlimited money to keep these jerks in office, that will keep costing them more and more as time goes on.

And if you've still got legs that work, get out there and GOTV.

I live in a solidly blue area, but we have a pretty important council seat being contested (mostly by Democrats running as independent, because you have to be a non-Democrat to get it). Also an important attorney general race we didn't have a primary for.

I live in red territory. Even in a mostly Democrat city, I think my job prospects are safer if I remain registered independent and just vote Democrat in the general election.

Am I worrying too much? Do employers look at that public information?

you probably wouldn't be happy working for them anyway. I live in Southwest Riverside County in California which is less red than it was a few years ago, but still very conservative. Everyone at my two major jobs here knew where I stood and it was never a problem.
