I've been wondering for a while what will happen when all the stuff that's stuck on boats or sitting at docks finally makes it to its destination.

The short answer: really, really big sales

Retailers will have a choice to make come January: pack everything and hold it until next year or sell it at a deep discount.

1. I would not count on any bargains

There may be some spot sales, but I don’t see any huge price reductions .

Electronics are in short supply and there are plenty of unfilled back orders to soak up the inventory.

Ugly holiday sweaters might not have a market no matter the price. They only move in a specific season.

What will be interesting is what will happen when component back orders start to fall. Right now, a lot of companies are hoarding components. They have moved from kan-ban to buying enough to last a year or more. That is partly what is causing the shortage.

When parts become available again, companies are going to want to reduce component inventories. Could be some deals out there......

3. In 1978 I bought my mother a first in a series Norman Rockwell porcelain Christmas ornament.

We continued to buy them annually, and after mom died the ornaments came to us. We dutifully continued to buy them, even as the quality declined, the price rose, and some years the ornament had nothing to do with Christmas. We didn’t want to break up the series.

This year we ordered the ornament in September. We received several notices that shipping was delayed, and might not arrive before Christmas. It didn’t; it arrived last week — just in time for New Years. No discount at all.
